The good news is that, despite some changes in certain events included by the host country at each SEA Games, we have always adapted and met the performance requirements. The 32nd SEA Games left behind many beautiful images and victories that have gone down in history, making us cherish and be proud of them.
The coaching staff has planned for Nguyen Huy Hoang (center) to reach his peak form for the 19th Asian Games in September.
With 4 gold medals at the Games, Nguyen Thi Oanh has increased her total number of gold medals at the SEA Games to 12. But what makes everyone admire this girl from Bac Giang, who is only 1.50m tall and once suffered from glomerulonephritis, is that she won 2 gold medals in the 1,500m and then the 3,000m steeplechase with an extremely short starting time in the latter event. That was the first gold medal for Vietnam in golf at the Southeast Asian Games , from the magnificent performance of Le Khanh Hung, a boy who was only 15 years old. We are proud of the achievement of Nguyen Thuy Hien, nearly 14 years old, on the green track. Although it was only a bronze medal, for the girl who is now being dubbed "Anh Vien version 2.0," it is an impressive start and promises to shine in the future.

However, there are still concerns. Based on the achievements and shortcomings at the 32nd SEA Games, we urgently need deeper analysis and lessons learned for the upcoming major continental and world competitions. While Vietnam secured the top position in terms of quantity, there are still many issues to discuss regarding quality. We didn't set many SEA Games records (only 7, including one in swimming and 5 in diving), and records are always considered a sign of progress.
And very frankly, in an article, Mr. Nguyen Hong Minh, former Director of the High-Performance Sports Department of the Sports and Physical Education Committee (the old name of the General Department of Sports and Physical Education), and former Head of the Vietnamese sports delegation at many SEA Games, warned that at the 32nd SEA Games - athletics and swimming, two key sports for the 19th Asian Games in September - had fallen short of their gold medal targets. According to Mr. Minh, this was not the best preparation for the Asian Games. At this SEA Games, despite the remarkable achievements of Nguyen Thi Oanh, after two consecutive Games leading in athletics, we were forced to relinquish the number one spot to Thailand in terms of total medals. Mr. Minh posed the question, "Who will be the spearhead to compete for medals at the continental arena?" Also according to Mr. Minh, regarding swimming, although many individuals such as the trio of Nguyen Huy Hoang, Pham Thanh Bao, and Tran Hung Nguyen tried their best, the performance of Vietnamese swimming at this SEA Games did not meet the set target. That is the issue that "managers and professionals must thoroughly analyze, then find methods and create conditions to improve performance in regional or continental competitions."
The fact that the Vietnamese U22 team failed to defend their SEA Games gold medal is perhaps a symbolic representation of what still needs improvement. Does this suggest that Vietnamese sports still have shortcomings that may not be resolved in the near future?
