The 7th Young Fine Arts Festival - 2024 honors many young artists with new creative thinking.

Nearly 150 works including paintings, graphics, sculptures, installation art, performance art, visual art and other contemporary art forms were selected from 121 authors nationwide, aged between 18 and 35.

From 1,050 entries - a record number ever, the Arts Council selected 29 awards.

Festival Art The Young Artists' Festival is organized every two years by the Department of Fine Arts, Photography and Exhibitions (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) to search for, introduce and honor new, young and unique authors and works.

This year, the Organizing Committee did not set a fixed theme for the creation; instead, it encouraged content about contemporary life and unique forms, trends, ideas, styles, and creative writing techniques. From 1,050 entries - a record number to date, the Arts Council selected 29 awards.

The Award Ceremony and Exhibition Opening attracted a large number of visitors as well as artists, designers and art researchers of all ages, demonstrating the growing interest in contemporary art.

This year's works are considered "newer" and "younger" than last season, vividly reflecting the cultural and spiritual life of people in the new era.

Painter Luong Xuan Doan, Chairman of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association, commented: "Young, dynamic and confident people have made efforts to find for themselves art forms in all materials, styles, themes and ways of expression. That shows that this is a time of generational transition. Artists born in the 80s, 90s and even younger have begun to resolutely join in, living a contemporary life to find inspiration and a voice to portray the story of their time."

At the exhibition, viewers can easily encounter works that convey familiar issues of modern society in the language of art. That is the loneliness and isolation in the matrix of information and technology, the confusion of youth at the threshold of life, and also the contemplation when people lose connection with each other and with nature...

The richness and innovation of materials is also a highlight, with many sculptures and installations made from jeans, metal, synthetic resin, etc. skillfully handled by young artists.

However, the three works that won the highest prizes were quite simple in form. For example, the work that won first prize in the painting category was the oil painting "My Mother" by artist Vang Hai Hung (born in 1995). The Giay ethnic group artist from Lao Cai painted "mother" but there was no human image in the painting, but instead an old bicycle, a tattered conical hat, a dry brown dirt road...

Vang Hai Hung said that he chose a conceptual drawing style, metaphorical but not always specific to a message, thereby encouraging the viewer's imagination and allowing them to create their own stories.

Similarly, two other First Prize winning works, "Suot" (installation category) by Pham Thuy Duong and "After the Rain" (graphic category) by Bui Thi Yen Vy, also showed creativity and inspiration beyond the limits of traditional materials.

Some outstanding works that attracted the audience's attention due to both content and form of expression include "Storm in the Night" (Third Prize) by Can Van An, with the story of rescue in the tragic fire in Hanoi last year.

The author creates an image on an aluminum door, in addition to paint, there are also electric wires and small pieces of metal to create a special effect. Or the work "Fish Season" (Second Prize) by author Le Cong Vuong is created from recycled jeans, with light and dark tones mixed very smoothly and the metal buttons become the sparkling eyes of the fish in the net... Types of art such as installation, performance, video art are also more abundant than every year, showing the strong development trend and the participation of the team of painters, sculptors, and graphic designers.

The installation work "Thousand Years of Reflection" (Second Prize) by author Nguyen Tuan Dung was highly appreciated for its images and stories from tradition, imbued with Vietnamese identity in general and the mark of Thang Long-Hanoi in particular. The author said that when wanting to incorporate images of relics and heritage into his work, ceramics is the top priority material.

The young artist crafted ceramic pieces that represent traces of many dynasties, adding synthetic materials, LED lights and acrylic to make the work more interactive, with the meaning of lighting up precious heritages so they don't sink into oblivion.

Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ta Quang Dong said that performance, installation, video art, etc. are popular in the world but not practiced regularly in Vietnam. Therefore, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism hopes that through playgrounds such as the Young Fine Arts Festival, it will contribute to encouraging contemporary art, nurturing the spirit of young artists, making the Vietnamese fine arts market more active, and integrating more clearly into the international community.

Through seven seasons, the Young Fine Arts Festival is actively transforming itself, fulfilling its role in reflecting the face of contemporary art through young "eyes" and nurturing new talents for the fine arts, serving the need to improve spiritual life.
