The US military confirmed on May 30 that it had neutralized a Gambian-flagged cargo ship en route to Iran by firing missiles at its engine compartment, as part of an operation to enforce a blockade of Iranian ports.

According to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the cargo ship M/V Lian Star was traveling to an Iranian port in the Gulf of Oman when it was detected by U.S. forces. Prior to taking action, the U.S. military issued more than 20 warnings, stating that the ship was violating the blockade Washington had imposed on Iranian ports.

CENTCOM said a U.S. military aircraft fired a Hellfire missile at the ship's engine compartment after the crew failed to comply with orders to stop and change course.

"The ship is no longer continuing its journey to Iran," CENTCOM stated on social media platform X.

This is the fifth commercial vessel disabled by the US military since the blockade began on April 13. In addition, more than 100 other ships have been forced to change course and are no longer proceeding to Iranian ports.

This move comes amid escalating tensions between the US and Iran. Earlier, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that Washington was ready to resume attacks on Iran if negotiations to end the conflict between the two countries failed.

Israel closes schools at the border.

In other international news from the Middle East, Israel closed schools in its northern border region and moved the operations of a major hospital to a fortified underground facility, following increased rocket and drone attacks by Hezbollah.

Israel's Internal Front Command announced that schools in communities along the border with Lebanon will be closed for two days, May 31 and June 1. Outdoor gatherings will also be limited to a maximum of 50 people, while beaches in northern Israel will be temporarily closed.

The Israeli Ministry of Health also announced that the Galilee Medical Center in Nahariya will move all its operations to a protected underground treatment facility. The hospital is located approximately 10 kilometers from the Israel-Lebanon border.

According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), on May 31, the military recorded at least 15 rocket and drone launches from Lebanese territory targeting northern Israel. Most targets were intercepted by air defense systems, while the remainder fell into empty areas.

The IDF warned that the risk of attacks on northern Israel would increase as the Israeli army stepped up military operations in southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah, for its part, claimed to have carried out 24 attacks against Israeli targets that day. Of these, eight attacks directly targeted Israeli territory using rockets and explosive-laden drones, while the other 16 targeted Israeli military positions in southern Lebanon.
