Responding to reporters about the situation in Lebanon following the East Asia Summit in Laos, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said: "We continue to be strongly engaged in preventing wider conflict in the region."
The American diplomat also shared: “We all have a strong interest in trying to create an environment where people can return home safely and securely, and children can return to school. So Israel has a clear and very legitimate interest in doing that. The people of Lebanon want the same. We believe the best way to achieve that is through diplomatic understanding, an understanding we have been working towards for some time and one we are focusing on right now.”
Blinken noted that Israel “has the right to defend itself” against Hezbollah, but said he was concerned about the worsening humanitarian situation.
On the same day, according to a statement from the US State Department , Mr. Blinken had telephone conversations with Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament Nabih Berri. During these calls, the US Secretary of State expressed the view that "Lebanon cannot allow Iran or Hezbollah to impede its security and stability."
Lebanon's presidential seat has been vacant for two years, and Blinken stressed the need to "empower a leadership that reflects the will of the people for a stable, prosperous, and independent Lebanon."
Blinken's statement did not mention discussions about a possible ceasefire between Israel and the Iranian-backed armed group.
