The US has ordered 3,000 inexpensive Barracuda-500M missiles for regional conflict.

The U.S. Army has just signed an agreement to purchase at least 3,000 Barracuda-500M cruise missiles developed by defense company Anduril Industries, in a move seen as a significant boost to its long-range strike capabilities and expansion of its weapons stockpile to support high-intensity conflict scenarios in the Indo-Pacific region.

According to information released on May 15, the contract includes more than 60 containerized launchers and a delivery process spanning three years, beginning in 2027. The system is designed for rapid deployment from dispersed locations, helping the US military increase its survivability against preemptive attacks.

The Barracuda-500M is a subsonic cruise missile powered by a turbojet engine, with a range exceeding 500 nautical miles, or approximately 926 km. Despite its warhead weighing only about 45 kg, significantly smaller than the Tomahawk or JASSM-ER, this missile is optimized for destroying medium-value targets such as air defense radars, field command posts, mobile missile launchers, logistics depots, and coastal targets.

The Barracuda-500M's notable feature lies in its philosophy of "low-cost weapons produced in large quantities." According to Anduril, approximately 70% of the missile's components utilize readily available commercial parts, significantly reducing production costs and shortening assembly time. The company states that each missile can be completed in around 30 hours with a minimal number of assembly tools.

The US military believes this is a key factor, given Washington's concerns that its current missile arsenal is insufficient for a prolonged, high-intensity conflict. A CSIS report once suggested that the US could deplete a large portion of its precision missile stockpile in less than a week of major fighting.

In addition to its long range, the Barracuda-500M is deployed using launchers housed in standard 20-foot containers, which can be camouflaged and transported via conventional logistics systems. Each container can carry up to 16 missiles, allowing the US military to quickly disperse firepower to forward islands or small field bases in the Pacific.

Experts believe the Barracuda-500M will serve as an intermediate role between short-range tactical rockets and expensive cruise missiles like the Tomahawk or LRASM. With significantly lower costs, the US could use large numbers of Barracuda-500M to overwhelm enemy air defenses or simultaneously attack multiple targets.

Alongside the Anduril contract, the Pentagon is also implementing a program to purchase more than 10,000 low-cost cruise missiles from various manufacturers to build a large-scale attrition warfare capability in the future.

This new move indicates that the US military strategy is shifting strongly toward prioritizing weapons that can be mass-produced at lower costs, rather than relying entirely on expensive but limited-quantity systems as in the past.
