According to the Associated Press on June 2, the US State Department plans to significantly reduce the number of US embassies and consulates in Africa authorized to process visa applications from foreigners.

This plan is part of Washington's campaign to tighten the issuance of immigrant and non-immigrant visas, aimed at limiting immigration and preventing foreigners from overstaying their visas in the United States.

According to internal memos and U.S. officials, nearly 50 U.S. embassies and consulates currently handling visa applications will be reduced to 20 designated "centers" in the coming weeks.

The decision was approved last week by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. There is no specific effective date yet, but the change is expected to be implemented in June.

The 20 visa processing centers that were retained include: Abidjan (Ivory Coast), Accra (Ghana), Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Cape Town and Johannesburg (South Africa), Dakar (Senegal), Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), Djibouti (Djibouti), Kampala (Uganda), Kigali (Rwanda), Kinshasa (Congo), Lagos (Nigeria), Lomé (Togo), Luanda (Angola), Malabo (Equatorial Guinea), Monrovia (Liberia), Nairobi (Kenya), Port Louis (Mauritius), Praia (Cape Verde) and Yaoundé (Cameroon).

Under the new regulations, citizens of countries outside the "central hub" group will have to travel to another country to apply for a US visa. This could significantly increase costs and travel difficulties for applicants.

However, consular offices in countries not on the above list will continue to operate but will only provide limited services, such as assisting U.S. citizens with passport renewals, handling urgent requests, special cases related to national interests, or diplomatic visas.

US visa issuance in Africa has been impacted by numerous control measures in recent times, including entry restrictions on certain countries, a requirement for a $15,000 deposit from visa applicants, and restrictions related to the Ebola epidemic.

The U.S. State Department did not directly confirm the contents of the memorandum, but stated that it regularly reviews its overseas operations to allocate resources effectively and ensure that visa processing meets U.S. national security and interests.
