U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said the U.S. is achieving “the strongest level of border security in history.”

According to Mullin, the previous "catch and release" policy has ended, and the government is now focused on strictly enforcing immigration laws and deporting undocumented immigrants.

Data released by the DHS on May 18th shows that the average number of illegal immigrants apprehended at the southern border in a single day in April is now lower than the number of people crossing the border in just one hour during the peak period under the previous administration.

Specifically, in April of this year, US authorities apprehended an average of 298 people illegally crossing the border with Mexico each day. In contrast, in December 2023, the average number of arrests was 336 people per hour.

According to the DHS, the Trump administration has gone 12 consecutive months without releasing any undocumented immigrants at the border, and claims that the number of border crossings has now fallen to its lowest level since the early 1990s. The DHS believes these results reflect the effectiveness of current stringent border control policies.

Regarding law enforcement and stricter management of cases involving violations of federal financial obligations, the U.S. State Department announced on May 18th that it will begin a campaign to revoke the passports of thousands of U.S. citizens who are overdue in paying child support.

The department's announcement stated that this measure will be implemented starting May 19th, local time, initially focusing on cases with debts of $100,000 or more in child support. Data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services shows that there are currently approximately 2,700 people in this category who hold U.S. passports.

Under current federal law, any individual who owes more than $2,500 in child support as determined by a court may be denied a new passport or have their existing passport revoked.

The U.S. State Department said it is expanding coordination with the Department of Health and Human Services to strengthen enforcement against breaches of alimony obligations.

US officials said the goal of the campaign is to pressure parents who are late in paying their children's bills to fulfill their full financial responsibilities as required by law.
