On November 18, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin signed an agreement with his Philippine counterpart Gilberto Teodoro at the Philippine military headquarters, where the two leaders also broke ground on a coordination center to facilitate cooperation between the two countries' armed forces.
Known as the General Security of Military Information Agreement, or GSOMIA, this agreement allows both countries to securely share classified military information.
"This not only allows the Philippines access to higher capabilities and larger quantities of goods from the U.S., but also opens up opportunities to pursue similar agreements with like-minded nations," said Philippine Department of Defense spokesperson Arsenio Andolong.
Security commitments between the U.S. and the Philippines have deepened under President Joe Biden and his Philippine counterpart Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry said on November 18 that any military agreement or security cooperation "should not be aimed at or harm the interests of third parties and should not undermine regional peace or increase regional tensions."
