The Cultural Preservation Fund of the US Embassy in Vietnam has just awarded 92,500 USD (equivalent to nearly 2.2 billion VND) to sponsor the project 'Urgent restoration of the dome and preservation of the southern gate of the Ho Dynasty Citadel heritage site, Thanh Hoa province'.
Dr. Do Quang Trong, director of the Ho Dynasty Citadel Heritage Conservation Center (Vinh Loc district, Thanh Hoa) said that the above funding was given to the center by Ms. Molly Stephenson - cultural and information counselor of the US Embassy - on the afternoon of October 26, to carry out the project 'Urgent repair of the dome and conservation of the southern gate of the Ho Dynasty Citadel heritage' from now until June 2019.
The southern gate of the world cultural heritage of Ho Dynasty Citadel is 34,850m long, 15m deep, 10m high, built in an arched style with large flat rectangular stone slabs forming the gate body, and stone blocks with isosceles trapezoidal cross-sections creating the door arch.
Over the past 600 years, due to the impact of nature and humans, the southern gate relic has lost its architectural features such as the watchtower and the gates. In addition, there is currently a situation of the stone blocks forming the arch weighing about 200kg collapsing, creating a gap of about 5cm.
Funding from the US Embassy will promptly remedy and prevent the deterioration and collapse of the southern gate's dome; eliminate the encroachment and impact of plants, moss, lichen, salt, etc. on the southern gate wall, ensuring the integrity and aesthetics of the Ho Dynasty Citadel heritage.
This project demonstrates the US Embassy’s interest in preserving and promoting the value of the world cultural heritage of the Ho Dynasty Citadel. This is a recognition of the positive results of the friendly cooperation in the field of cultural heritage preservation between the US Embassy in Vietnam and Thanh Hoa province in recent times.
