In an interview with Reuters on Wednesday, a U.S. official confirmed that U.S. forces had successfully intercepted and shot down several Iranian drones before they could reach their targets.
Washington's latest military move comes amid heightened diplomatic efforts to end the three-month-long war. Having erupted on February 28 following a series of offensives by the US-Israel coalition, the conflict has claimed thousands of lives and triggered a global energy crisis.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump flatly rejected reports from Iranian state media suggesting that Tehran and Oman would jointly control shipping through the Strait of Hormuz under a potential peace agreement. Trump reiterated his tough stance, demanding that this vital waterway remain completely open and free of charge, as it was before the war.
On Monday, the U.S. also launched airstrikes against Iran despite a fragile ceasefire agreement in effect. The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that the targets neutralized included ships deliberately laying mines and a number of missile launch sites posing a direct threat to the safety of U.S. troops in the region.
