Earlier, Kyodo News reported that the US armed forces planned to deploy the Typhon system to the Kanoya Air Base of the Japan Self-Defense Forces in Kagoshima Prefecture during exercises scheduled to last from June to September. The exercises will also include the deployment of HIMARS missile launchers.
On May 28, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated: “We have repeatedly noted to Tokyo that we believe Japan’s allowing the United States to deploy medium- and short-range missile systems to the country will have serious consequences for stability and security in the Asia-Pacific region, creating a direct threat along our Far Eastern borders, regardless of whether this is done occasionally, on a rotational basis, or permanently.”
"Moscow will consider these to be deliberate and hostile actions that disregard Russia's national interests," Zakharova emphasized.
According to Zakharova, Russia is no longer bound by the ban on deploying land-based medium- and short-range missiles. “The risks arising from such provocative actions will be carefully assessed in order to develop appropriate military and technical measures, as stringent as possible for the long term,” the diplomat stated.
The Japanese government has not yet commented on Russia's latest warning.
