On May 21, US President Joe Biden criticized the Republican Party's proposals related to the public debt crisis as "unacceptable" in the context that the country is facing the risk of default.
Speaking to reporters in Japan, Mr. Joe Biden emphasized: "Now is the time for the other side (Republican Party - Editor's note) to abandon their extreme stance, because much of what they have proposed is simply unacceptable."
President Joe Biden said he would speak directly with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and expressed hope that a deal could be reached on the vexing issue, but warned that there was no guarantee that a default would be avoided.
President Joe Biden added that he is considering a constitutional provision in the 14th Amendment that would give the president the power to raise the debt ceiling.
