This is the result of a working session between a delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment led by Deputy Minister Hoang Trung and representatives of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), which took place in the US on April 10 (US time), to review the progress of opening the market for fresh fruit of each country.

Vietnam's passion fruit will be considered for import license by the US this year.

During this meeting, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and APHIS agreed that this year the two sides will promote the completion of approval to open the market for American tangerines and Vietnamese passion fruits.

For passion fruit, APHIS representatives announced that they had completed the pest risk assessment and risk management measures; and published the initial notice to widely solicit comments from other authorities.

For fresh American tangerines and lemons, the two sides agreed to organize a field inspection team during the harvest season in November this year.

In addition, representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and APHIS proposed to prioritize continuing to open the market for four types of fruit, including plums and lemons from the US and lemons and guavas from Vietnam.

Regarding American nectarines that have been licensed for import by Vietnam, it is expected that by the end of April, the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ) will send staff to inspect and evaluate growing areas in the US.

Also at the meeting, APHIS and the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection agreed that the two sides would organize a bilateral plant quarantine meeting in Vietnam this year.

The agency also requested that APHIS support training in pest risk analysis for plant quarantine officers and coordinate the development of a handbook on plant quarantine requirements for fruits licensed for import into the United States .

Currently, Vietnam has licensed the import of eight types of fresh fruit from the US, including: apples, grapes, oranges, cherries, pears, blueberries, peaches and nectarines.

In the opposite direction, the US opened its market to 8 types of fresh fruits from Vietnam, including: dragon fruit, mango, longan, lychee, rambutan, star apple, grapefruit, and coconut.
