In early August 2025, we had the opportunity to visit Na Va village, Ba Son commune. On the 11 km road from the commune center to the village, what impressed us were the vast forests stretching out and the spacious houses built close together.
Welcoming us in his spacious house, Mr. Trieu Huu Quy excitedly said: My family used to be a poor household. In recent years, with the guidance and encouragement of the commune government to participate in forestry training courses, my family has actively planted forests. Up to now, my family has about 2 hectares of pine trees and nearly 1 hectare of cassia trees that have been harvested; on average, each year we collect over 2 tons of pine resin and nearly 1 ton of cassia fruits, bringing in an income of over 100 million VND/year. Thanks to that, in 2023, my family has risen out of poverty. Currently, I am continuing to invest in planting and caring for over 1 hectare of eucalyptus trees.
Not only Mr. Quy's family, currently, 100% of households in Na Va village plant forests and have stable income from the forest. The whole village has about 120 hectares of pine; 50 hectares of eucalyptus and over 7 hectares of sugarcane.
Mr. Tran Van Mien, Party Cell Secretary and Head of Na Va Village, shared: The village has 90 households with 418 people. Previously, the villagers mainly engaged in small-scale agricultural production, many households still had the mentality of waiting for support from the State, afraid of change, so the village's poverty rate was high. To help the villagers rise up, the Party Cell, the village's Front Committee and mass organizations have propagated and mobilized the villagers to change the structure of crops and livestock. Accordingly, we organized village meetings and went to the villagers' homes to propagate to them. In particular, to promote the potential and advantages of developing the hill and forest economy , the village has focused on propagating to the villagers to develop forestry.
In addition, to help people gain knowledge and production techniques, every year, the village encourages people to participate in 1-2 training courses on science and technology transfer and vocational training in agriculture and forestry organized by the commune in coordination with specialized agencies.
In addition to promoting the development of afforestation, realizing that the local soil and climate are suitable for growing chestnuts, macadamia trees, etc., in recent years, the village has organized for people to visit and learn about macadamia and chestnut growing models in some communes and wards in the province. Thereby, helping people access new farming techniques, better understand the economic efficiency of these crops to have appropriate development directions. Up to now, the villagers have planted 4 hectares of macadamia trees and 3 hectares of chestnut trees, of which the chestnut area has been harvested for 2 years.
Along with economic development, the people of Na Va village are actively building new rural areas, especially consolidating rural transport infrastructure. In 2024 alone, the villagers donated over 13,000 m2 of land; contributed 70 million VND in cash; nearly 600 working days to join hands to implement criteria on transport, cultural facilities, etc.
Thanks to effective economic models and efforts to change the face of the homeland, the material and spiritual life of the villagers has been significantly improved, and the poverty rate has decreased sharply over the years. By the end of 2024, the poverty rate of the village was 4.44%, down 19.96% compared to 2021; average income per capita reached 45 million VND/person/year, an increase of 20 million VND compared to 2021.
Mr. Hua Van Thu, Vice Chairman of Ba Son Commune People's Committee, assessed: Na Va village is a bright spot of the commune in promoting internal resources to escape poverty. Without waiting or relying on others, people have known how to rely on the strength of the hills and forests to develop the economy. This is also a typical village of the commune with a model of growing macadamia and chestnut trees. With efforts to overcome difficulties, in April 2025, Na Va village was honored to receive a certificate of merit from the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee for its outstanding achievements in the emulation movement "For the poor, leaving no one behind" for the period 2021 - 2025.
The changes in the material and spiritual life of the people of Na Va village are proof of the effectiveness of promoting internal resources and exploiting local strengths in poverty reduction. From the economic models that have been and are being developed, it is believed that the people's lives will become increasingly better, thereby continuing to contribute positively to the socio-economic development of the commune.
