Knowledge standards according to the new general education program

Currently, the HSA exam of VNU is the only exam in Vietnam that allows candidates to register and take the exam on a computer with results displayed immediately after they submit their exam. This is also the first and only exam that allows candidates to proactively choose the exam location and exam session.

Director of the VNU Examination Center Nguyen Tien Thao said that in 2025, the goal will be to assess high school students' capacity according to the output standards of the new general education program; provide career orientation for learners based on their individual capacity; test students' knowledge of natural and social sciences, thinking, skills, and attitudes.

The test structure consists of 50 questions in mathematics and data processing, and 50 questions in the field of literature and language. These are two compulsory parts of the HSA exam. The third part allows candidates to choose between Science or English.

The time limit for the third test is 60 minutes. Candidates choose 3 out of 5 topics: physics, chemistry, biology, history, geography; each topic has 17 questions (including 1 test question) to complete the Science test. The English option consists of 50 objective multiple-choice questions designed to serve the admission of foreign language training programs.

Director of the Testing Center, Nguyen Tien Thao, added that the format and questions of the exam were adjusted to match the 2018 General Education Program, which did not disrupt teaching and learning at high school level; nor did it change the quality of the student assessment test questions.

The test scores are automatically graded by the ability assessment software. The test results are displayed on the computer screen after the candidate finishes the test or after the prescribed test time has expired. The total score of the entire test is 150 points based on the total number of correct answers of the candidate.

Each correct answer is worth 1 point, incorrect answers or no answers are not counted (test questions are not counted). The test score is the sum of the three test parts, each test part is worth a maximum of 50 points.

The result score sheet includes the total score (maximum 150 points) and 3 component scores: Mathematics and Data Processing (quantitative thinking), Literature - Language (qualitative thinking), Science or English.

The results of the Aptitude Test create many opportunities for candidates to choose to enter university.

75% objective multiple choice questions

Director of the VNU Testing Center Nguyen Tien Thao said: The questions in the HSA exam are about 75% objective multiple choice questions with 4 options. The new point in the structure of the 2025 competency assessment exam will be to add cluster questions in all test sections and test topics.

Cluster questions include general questions and specific questions that develop and assess candidates' abilities from low to high levels. Cluster questions will exploit rich data sources, assess students' thinking in each field and across fields. These are qualitative changes in building a question bank for competency assessment exams.

In particular, from 2025, in addition to the Science exam, this year the structure of the competency assessment exam will include an English exam so that candidates registering for foreign language-related majors can choose to serve the admission process.

The high school student competency assessment test is designed to assess the core competencies required of high school students according to the General Education Program and is consistent with the standards and trends of competency assessment in the world.

Through the knowledge content of the general education program, the test assesses three main groups of competencies that students achieve after graduating from high school.

The difficulty of the questions in the exam increases from level 1 to level 3 and is divided according to the following ratio: Level 1: 20%, Level 2: 60%, Level 3: 20%.

Organize 6 exams in 2025

In 2025, the VNU capacity assessment exam will be held in 6 sessions, starting from March 23 to June 2, 2025 at 19 testing locations.

The exams are expected to take place from March to May 2025 with a scale of 85,000 exams. On February 8, 2025, the registration portal for the 2025 HSA exam will officially open. On March 15, 2025, candidates are expected to take the first exam, and on May 17, 2025, the sixth exam.

The registration portal for the National High School Exam accepts candidates to register at least 30 days in advance from the first exam session of the year. Candidates can register for a maximum of 2 exams per year and the registration period between 2 consecutive exams is 28 days (including holidays, days off, weekends) depending on the candidate's wishes.
