According to the Department of Education and Training of Da Nang City, as of early June 2025, the city has 74/96 primary schools and 22/58 secondary schools with swimming pools funded by the city to teach swimming for free to students. At the end of each course, students take a final test with the requirement of swimming 25m and floating in water for at least 30 seconds to be granted a certificate of completion of the swimming course; if they fail, they will have to retake the course.
At Tran Dai Nghia Primary School, since the beginning of June, free swimming classes for children during the summer, organized by the Youth Union (Cam Le District Youth Union) in coordination with the Summer Activities Steering Committee of Hoa Xuan Ward, have been continuously organized, attracting nearly 800 students/2 courses to participate.
Mr. Phan Cong Tin - Vice Principal of Tran Dai Nghia Primary School said: The students participating in the summer swimming course are in grades 3, 4, and 5 and do not have a safety swimming certificate. The swimming classes take place throughout the summer, divided into 2 courses: course 1 from June 2 to July 17; course 2 from August 18 to August 30.
Students participating in the class are enthusiastically instructed by teachers on techniques for breaststroke, backstroke, freestyle swimming, etc. and survival skills if they accidentally fall into the water. Through the course of the class, the students attend class regularly, on time, and have mastered basic swimming skills.
Free swimming class at Tran Quang Dieu Primary School, students are carefully instructed from warming up before getting into the water, to preventing cramps, first aid techniques for drowning people, basic swimming methods, escape skills, how to float to the surface of the water for 30 seconds to wait for rescuers... There are 2 swimming instructors always on duty and accompanying about 10 students/class.
Units and localities in the city also simultaneously opened free swimming classes for children during the summer. The Youth Union (Da Nang City Youth Union) directed 100% of its affiliated units to coordinate with localities to organize free swimming classes for disadvantaged children in the area.
In addition, the People's Committee of Hoa Xuan Ward coordinated with the Ward Youth Union to organize a swimming tournament for teenagers and children in 2025. The swimming tournament has become an annual local sports activity every summer, attracting many parents to bring their children to participate and practice, contributing to promoting the safe swimming movement and building safe schools.
In Hoa Vang commune, right after the summer break, the commune launched a movement to teach safe swimming and prevent drowning accidents in 2025. Accordingly, 27/28 primary and secondary schools with artificial swimming pools in 11 communes simultaneously launched a movement to teach free swimming to all students, including parents in need.
This year’s summer swimming program is divided into two courses, each enrolling 350 to 400 students. During the swimming class, students are trained in basic swimming techniques; some escape skills, how to float on the water for 30 seconds to wait for rescue, and first aid techniques for drowning people.
In particular, this year's swimming program focuses on improving quality, encouraging children to participate in many courses to improve swimming techniques and proactively escape when falling into unexpected situations.
