Improve OCOP product quality from internal resources

In the midst of the fertile red soil, Phu Giao district has gradually affirmed its position on the agricultural map of Binh Duong province through the program "One Commune One Product" (OCOP). From traditional specialties such as green-skinned grapefruit, melon, durian, fresh guava to handmade wine products, bird's nest, lingzhi mushrooms... people in the district have gradually brought their specialty products far and wide, contributing to building a sustainable new countryside.

Diversify OCOP products

In the land with the largest natural area of the province, famous for its agricultural strengths, Phu Giao district has been affirming the right direction in developing OCOP products. From familiar products to preparations, the district is constantly expanding the scale and improving the quality of products to affirm its unique brand.

Participating in the OCOP Program since 2022, Thanh Kien Guava Agricultural Cooperative (Phuoc Hoa Commune) is one of the typical agricultural production models of Phu Giao District. In 2022, the Cooperative's guava products were recognized as achieving 3-star OCOP. Mr. Nguyen Hoang Trong Hieu, Director of the Cooperative, said that the unit has 7 members, mainly growing red-fleshed queen guava and Taiwanese guava. Since the product was recognized as 3-star OCOP, the value of the Cooperative's products has been increased, with a stable consumption market. "Not only stopping at making logos and slogans, we also always strive to bring product quality along with the brand. In 2025, the Cooperative will continue to register to participate in the OCOP Program to be recognized again," said Mr. Hieu.

Mr. Van Quang Chinh, Vice Chairman of Phu Giao District People's Committee, emphasized that the OCOP Program has contributed to raising awareness of all levels, sectors and people about rural economic development based on local advantages, changing the mindset from pure agricultural production to comprehensive rural economic development. Many OCOP entities have proactively improved packaging, built brands and expanded consumption channels, gradually bringing products to e-commerce platforms and supermarket chains in the region. As of the end of February 2025, the whole district had 28 OCOP products recognized as 3 stars or higher, including 27 products meeting 3-star standards and 1 product meeting 4-star standards.

Need more "push"

Currently, the OCOP participants in Phu Giao district are quite diverse, including cooperatives, business households, small enterprises and farm models. In particular, the role of market leadership and production - consumption linkage of cooperatives and enterprises is clearly demonstrated, contributing to the formation of a closed value chain from production to product consumption.

Among the participants in the OCOP Program, the business household Dinh Ngoc Khuong (An Binh commune) is a typical example of the effective combination of people's internal strength and local support policies on product diversification. In 2023, the chicken egg product of this business household was recognized as meeting 3-star OCOP standards, followed by the durian product under the Phu An Khuong brand in 2024. Promoting the achieved results, in 2025, Mr. Khuong continued to register to participate in the OCOP Program with a set of alcoholic beverage products including 6 items. Mr. Khuong shared that participating in the OCOP Program not only helps to improve the competitiveness of products but also opens up opportunities for cooperatives, business households, enterprises, and farms to access technical standards, packaging, traceability, and expand the consumption market.

Despite many positive results, it is noted that most of Phu Giao district's OCOP products are still small-scale, lacking attractive designs, not applying modern preservation and processing technology, and not effectively connecting with distribution channels. According to the district leaders, the locality is facing many difficulties due to not being adjacent to large urban areas, the consumption market is still limited, and the transport infrastructure and logistics services have not developed synchronously. Currently, most OCOP products are seasonal, dependent on natural conditions and small-scale production methods. After the products are recognized as meeting OCOP standards, support work is still limited, not creating motivation to upgrade products. Most OCOP products are still pre-processed or fresh products, with low technology content and low added value. Meanwhile, there are few 4-star OCOP products, and there are no typical national products. Many OCOP entities are still confused in building business plans, developing brands and expanding markets.

Another difficulty is that investment resources for the OCOP Program are still limited, trade promotion and product introduction activities are not synchronized, there is a lack of stable display points, and at the same time, it has not attracted large enterprises to participate in deep processing and development of raw material areas.

For the OCOP Program to develop stably, Mr. Van Quang Chinh said that it is necessary to promote scientific and technical support, promote trade systematically and especially build a new cooperative model associated with key products. At the same time, integrate the OCOP Program with the construction of advanced new rural areas, considering this a key direction to increase the value and competitiveness of local agricultural products.

Phu Giao district aims to have at least 50 OCOP products recognized as 3 stars or higher by 2030, including at least 5 products with 4 stars and 1-2 products with 5 stars at the national level. Each commune and town strives to have at least 2 OCOP products with characteristics of the raw material area and suitable for local farming conditions. At the same time, the district will form and develop at least 10 production - consumption chains of OCOP products.
