Binh Dinh province has increased the capacity of several quarries to meet the demand for construction materials for the Eastern section of the North-South Expressway passing through the province.
Shortage of asphalt concrete construction materials.
In response to the 500-day campaign to accelerate progress, in the last days of November, despite continuous rain, the atmosphere at the Hoai Nhon - Quy Nhon expressway construction site in Binh Dinh province remained very busy.
At package 12-XL, our reporter witnessed six construction teams with approximately 150 workers from Phuc Loc Group Company working tirelessly. Numerous trucks lined up, transporting crushed stone aggregate to be dumped on the main route.
The contractor for the expressway project through Binh Dinh province is looking for a reliable source of high-quality stone for construction.
Two workers quickly maneuvered the bulldozer to push the stone blocks out and spread them evenly on the surface. Three rollers followed behind, continuously compacting the aggregate layers until the required density was achieved. The work was carried out in a coordinated and rhythmic manner, as if pre-programmed.
By late afternoon, an additional 500 meters of the highway surface had been paved with crushed stone aggregate. Despite unfavorable weather conditions, all bridge sections along the route were completed. Four other construction teams proceeded with the asphalt paving, achieving over 80% completion.
Mr. Mai Huy Cu, Deputy Executive Director of Phuc Loc Group Joint Stock Company, said that the unit has almost completed the crushed stone base layer and is urgently laying the cement-stabilized crushed stone base layer (CTB) on the assigned volume.
The unit is currently surveying sources of stone materials that meet standards for asphalt paving of the road surface next December.
"The biggest challenge now is securing the necessary stone materials for asphalt paving. The unit has surveyed many locations, but many quarries do not meet quality standards. The materials at Son Hai Group's quarry in Phu My district, which could be used for paving, have low reserves."
"We surveyed and planned to buy stone from Khanh Hoa for use. However, transportation has to be done by sea, a long distance, and the cost of materials increases many times over," Mr. Cu shared, adding that, according to calculations, the unit needs about 40,000 cubic meters of stone for asphalt paving.
Many contractors are in need of large quantities of crushed stone for asphalt paving on highways.
Regarding the construction of 5km of road on the Hoai Nhon - Quy Nhon section of the expressway project, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Luan, Commander of Construction Corporation No. 8 (Cienco 8), said that the unit is also considering mobilizing stone from Khanh Hoa or Quang Binh provinces to serve the asphalt concrete construction.
"This will create difficulties for contractors due to the long distance, driving up costs," Mr. Luan worried.
Increase mine capacity to serve the North-South Expressway project exclusively.
The North-South Expressway passing through Binh Dinh province has a length of 118km, comprising 3 component projects: Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon, Hoai Nhon - Quy Nhon, and Quy Nhon - Chi Thanh.
According to the investor's report, the total demand for crushed stone for all three sections of the expressway in the province is approximately 6.5 million cubic meters.
Of that amount, approximately 4.5 million m3 was sourced from commercial quarries, 1.05 million m3 was utilized from the rock excavated for tunnel No. 3 (bordering Quang Ngai and Binh Dinh provinces), and 894,000 m3 was utilized from 5 excavation sections on the main route.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa, Deputy Director of the Department of Transport of Binh Dinh province, the province has introduced 19 licensed commercial quarries with a reserve of 29 million cubic meters to the investor for survey, meeting the requirements.
Currently, the investor is using 6 mines with an annual extraction capacity of 772,000 m3 to serve the project.
The contractor constructing the expressway through Binh Dinh province stated that they are meticulously checking the quality of the stone to ensure the quality of the project later on.
According to the approved design survey documents, the stone used as construction material will be sourced from the excavation of tunnel number 3 of the Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon expressway.
However, assessing that this quarry source was unusable, the investor proposed increasing the capacity of 4 quarries (Binh De, Kim Thanh, Truong Thinh, and Hoai My Cooperatives), with an estimated reserve of over 1 million m3 over a period of 2 years to serve the project.
"Following the above proposal, the People's Committee of Binh Dinh province has decided to increase the mining capacity of the mineral exploitation license granted to Hoai My Trading Company Limited in Hoai Chau Bac commune, Hoai Nhon town, to serve the construction of the North-South expressway."
Specifically, it allows Hoai My Trading Company Limited to increase its quarrying capacity by 50%, from 41,500 m3 of various types of construction stone per year to 62,250 m3 of various types of construction stone per year. The increased capacity is required to be used solely for the construction of the North-South Expressway.
"Binh Dinh province has also allowed a 50% increase in the quarrying capacity for construction materials, from over 136,000 cubic meters of raw stone per year to over 204,000 cubic meters per year, for the quarry located west of Binh De Pass (Hoai Chau Bac commune, Hoai Nhon town) belonging to Truong Thinh Company, to serve the construction of the expressway through the area," a representative of the Binh Dinh Department of Transport informed.
