The Indian Meteorological Department said temperatures in the capital New Delhi soared to a record high of 49.9 degrees Celsius on May 28.
The Indian Meteorological Department recorded temperatures at two stations in the outskirts of New Delhi, Narela and Mungeshpur, and confirmed a "severe heatwave situation".
Temperatures are expected to remain at similar high levels on May 29th.
In May 2022, areas in New Delhi recorded temperatures as high as 49.2 degrees Celsius, Indian media reported at the time.
India typically experiences high temperatures during the summer. However, years of scientific research have revealed that climate change is making heatwaves longer, more frequent, and more intense.
The New Delhi authorities have also warned of the risk of water shortages as the capital experiences a severe heatwave, forcing cuts in water supply to some areas.
The Indian Meteorological Department has warned of the health impacts of the heatwave, particularly for infants, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses.
