- In the context of an increasingly competitive market, the protection of the collective trademark for Van Quan sticky rice is of significant importance in safeguarding the reputation and brand of the product. This provides a basis for enhancing the value of this specialty product.
Khau Sli is a traditional cake deeply rooted in the cultural life of the Tay and Nung ethnic groups in the province, including communes formerly belonging to Van Quan district. Van Quan's Khau Sli has become a valuable commodity, contributing to job creation and increased income for the people. However, in reality, production and business activities remain largely small-scale and lack coordination; packaging and labeling are simple; the product lacks a unified brand identity system and intellectual property protection. This makes it difficult for the product to compete in the market, build consumer trust, and easily confuse it with similar products.

Based on that experience, in 2024, the Department of Science and Technology included the task of building the collective trademark "Khau Sli Van Quan" in the provincial intellectual property development program, assigning the Science and Technology Center to implement it.
Mr. Nguyen Manh Tuong, Deputy Director in charge of the Center for Science and Technology, Department of Science and Technology, said: During the project implementation, we conducted surveys and assessments of the current status of 50 establishments producing and trading "khau sli" (a type of Vietnamese snack) in the communes of the former Van Quan district to evaluate product characteristics, production scale, and consumption market; at the same time, we analyzed quality and food safety indicators and built a map of production areas bearing the collective trademark.
In addition, the center also developed a trademark management system including: regulations on the management and use of collective trademarks; regulations on the use of labels and product packaging; quality control documents; and guidelines for granting trademark usage rights. The unit also designed and finalized a brand identity system with samples of the collective trademark, packaging, labels, brochures, etc., to increase product recognition and promotion in the market.
In December 2025, the collective trademark "Khau Sli Van Quan" was officially registered with the Intellectual Property Office. This is an important foundation for enhancing the value and competitiveness of the product, while strengthening linkages between production households and aiming for product development according to common standards.
During the implementation of the task, the Center for Science and Technology supported 28 production households in building product declaration dossiers, registering barcode numbers, registering trademarks, and improving the capacity to manage and exploit collective trademarks.
Ms. Dong Thi Thu, from Phu Nhuan village, Diem He commune - owner of Thanh Thu sticky rice cake production facility, said: "My family started making sticky rice cakes in 2018, initially mainly on a small scale. Previously, due to the lack of a clear brand and packaging, sales were difficult. Since registering the trademark, our family's products have become more widely known, and sales have increased 5-10 times compared to before."
According to many producers, since the establishment of the collective trademark, businesses have proactively coordinated with authorities to standardize production processes, improve packaging and labels, and enhance product quality. As a result, the product is not only sold at traditional markets but also available in many OCOP stores and supermarket chains inside and outside the province. Production has increased, contributing to job creation and higher incomes for producers and businesses. This shows that the establishment and protection of trademarks is creating momentum for the sustainable development of traditional products.
