On May 27, the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced the Lunar Base initiative, outlining plans to establish a long-term human presence near the Moon's South Pole. This is part of the larger Artemis exploration program.
At a press conference at NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C., NASA officials outlined the strategy and roadmap for building the infrastructure to support long-term human exploration, scientific research, and commercial activities on the Moon.
Specifically, the Lunar Base will be built in three phases. The first phase, lasting until 2029, will focus on robotic exploration and technology testing in the lunar environment.
The second phase, from 2029-2032, will involve the deployment of initial systems serving residential areas, as well as electricity and telecommunications infrastructure.
The third phase, beginning after 2032, aims to establish a permanent human presence on the Moon and promote advanced technologies for utilizing the Moon's resources.
NASA explained that the reason for choosing the Moon's South Pole as the base location is because this area has a long period of sunlight, which is favorable for solar power generation and provides more stable thermal conditions for surface activities.
This area is also of great scientific significance, as it is located near some of the oldest landforms on the Moon, part of the largest known impact crater in the Solar System.
According to NASA, samples from this area could provide new insights into the early history of the Moon and the Earth-Moon system, as well as the formation of the Solar System.
The agency emphasized that the Lunar Base will serve as a center for scientific research, technology testing, and space exploration, promoting advanced technologies for future deep space missions and the emerging lunar economy .
