Netflix is facing a high-profile lawsuit in the US after Texas authorities accused the streaming platform of illegally collecting user data and deliberately designing its system to make viewers, especially children, "addicted" to its content.
On May 11th, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit against Netflix in state court in the Dallas area. In the 59-page filing, he accuses the streaming giant of secretly monitoring user behavior on a large scale.
According to the lawsuit, Netflix built a “massive database” detailing users’ viewing habits, personal preferences, and other sensitive behavioral data. The platform then allegedly used or provided this data to support advertising and optimize its targeting capabilities.
The Texas Attorney General's office even accused Netflix of "tracking Texas children and consumers," emphasizing that the company had misled people by promoting itself as a "child-safe" and "low-ads" platform.
One of the main focuses of the lawsuit is the "autoplay" feature—automatically playing the next episode—which is enabled by default on the platform, even for children's accounts. According to the lawsuit, this mechanism is designed to prolong continuous viewing time and create dependence on the content.
Attorney General Paxton asserted that Netflix “is not the child-friendly platform they claim to be,” but is exploiting personal data to generate billions of dollars in profits.
The lawsuit asks the court to issue an injunction prohibiting Netflix from continuing to collect or share user data during the trial.
In addition, the Texas state government is proposing civil penalties of up to $10,000 for each violation under the state's Consumer Protection Law.
