If TikTok is gone, what app will Americans use?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên28/04/2024

According to research firm eMarketer, American adults spend an average of 54 minutes on TikTok each day, surpassing rivals like Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube. TikTok said the ban could have a major impact on the 170 million Americans and 7 million small businesses that operate on the platform.

Although TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew has confirmed that he will not sell TikTok, many Americans are starting to look for other short video apps to replace TikTok in the worst case scenario.

Instagram Reels

Reels is a feature on Instagram that allows users to film, edit and post videos from 3 to 90 seconds long. Similar to TikTok, Reels also allows users to edit color filters, add music or text, set recording time and use effects.

Instagram Reels được xem là đối thủ lớn nhất của TikTok

Instagram Reels is seen as TikTok's biggest competitor

Based on YPulse’s social media behavior data, 72% of 13-17 year olds, 71% of 18-24 year olds, and 45% of 25-39 year olds in North America currently use TikTok. In the event of TikTok disappearing, the majority of survey respondents said they would switch to Instagram Reels.

Instagram's Reels is arguably the most popular TikTok clone. While many say its algorithm isn't as good as TikTok's, it's still the best alternative overall, thanks to the fact that creators often post videos on both platforms.

Copying TikTok's algorithm is a near-impossible task, and Meta is proof of that, analyst Jasmine Enberg told AP. TikTok's ability to provide relevant entertainment to its users is unparalleled in the social media world , she stressed.

Facebook Reels

Like Instagram, Facebook Reels also allows users to post videos up to 90 seconds long. Since Facebook and Instagram are both owned by Meta, you can set up Facebook Reels to automatically share to your Instagram account and vice versa.

YouTube Shorts

According to a survey by the Pew Research Center, about 9 in 10 American teenagers use YouTube. It is also the most popular platform among teenagers aged 13 to 17. It is followed by TikTok at 63%, Snapchat at 60% and Instagram at 59%.

Google launched Shorts in 2020, shortly after India banned TikTok. Thanks to its integration with YouTube, Shorts quickly gained a large user base.

Shorts lets users shoot videos up to 60 seconds long, and comes with video editing tools, speed controls, timers, and countdowns for hands-free recording. But Shorts content is often less interesting than its competitors, as most of the videos are cut from longer YouTube videos. Another limitation is that Shorts' algorithm has yet to really impress users.

Triller

According to CNET , Triller has some basic features such as posting videos, editing, adding songs and sharing on different platforms. This application has similar social features to TikTok, such as watching videos from Community and Following (people you are following). In addition, accounts with a large number of followers can also make money through Triller's Wallet system.

During his term in office, former US President Donald Trump repeatedly expressed his intention to ban TikTok. In August 2020, Mr. Trump suddenly created an account and posted videos on Triller, causing the number of app downloads to skyrocket. However, Triller quickly fell behind its competitors because its content was not diverse, and its user base was also inferior to platforms from technology giants such as Google and Meta.
