PIF now face two options: keep Isak at all costs, or sell him early to have time to find a replacement. |
Shearer was not shy about criticising Newcastle's handling of the Isak news: "It was ridiculous for Newcastle to announce that Isak would not be travelling on tour because of a minor thigh injury. If they thought people didn't know anything, and acted like that, it was disappointing. The club should have told the truth from the start."
On July 24, Newcastle United decided to remove Isak from the list of 30 players participating in the tour in Asia. The "Magpies" management announced that the player was absent due to injury. However, shortly after, the British media reported that Isak wanted to leave Newcastle and requested not to participate in the tour.
Shearer stressed that Newcastle needed to be transparent to maintain the trust of the fans. “Eddie Howe has to do everything he can to convince and try to keep Isak for another year. If that can’t happen, then that’s the reality the club has to accept,” he said.
“You have to get the best deal for the club. If someone is willing to pay the price and Isak really wants to go, you can’t stop the player,” Shearer said. Although Newcastle still have the advantage with Isak having three years left on his contract, the club need to do something to resolve the crisis.
Newcastle have failed to sign any notable new players, while rivals Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal have spent hundreds of millions of pounds. Isak's desire to leave is not too surprising, as the promise of a contract extension with a higher salary (currently £120,000/week) has not been fulfilled by the Magpies.
