Newcastle's squad faces the prospect of falling apart. |
Eddie Howe's team suffered a major shock in the Champions League, losing 2-7 to Barcelona in the second leg of the round of 16, thus being eliminated with an aggregate score of 3-8. In the Premier League, Newcastle also finished 9th, 7 points behind Liverpool in 5th place with 8 rounds remaining.
The risk of not being able to participate in the Champions League next season has left the future of many key players uncertain. Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes, and Tino Livramento are all on the radar of big clubs.
Notably, captain Guimaraes has been linked with a move to Manchester United to replace Casemiro. Despite having two years left on his contract, the Brazilian midfielder is highly likely to leave amid interest from Real Madrid.
Meanwhile, Tonali is valued at around £100 million and is being pursued by a host of big clubs such as Man City, Arsenal, Real Madrid and MU. Although Newcastle insists the Italian player is not for sale, his agent has left open the possibility of him finding a new club.
After losing Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a record £130 million last summer, Newcastle are unwilling to be further depleted. However, securing Champions League qualification is seen as a key factor in retaining their star players.
Conversely, the St James' Park side is also planning a squad overhaul. They are targeting goalkeeper Gregor Kobel (Dortmund) and Bart Verbruggen (Brighton). In addition, Newcastle are also eyeing attacking options such as Dominic Solanke (Tottenham) and Liam Delap (Chelsea).
