Newcastle are considering signing David De Gea.

Newcastle could sign former Man Utd goalkeeper David De Gea after losing Nick Pope to injury.

In Manchester United's 1-0 victory in the 14th round of the Premier League last weekend, Nick Pope suffered a recurrence of his shoulder injury and had to be replaced by Martin Dubravka. The 31-year-old goalkeeper may require surgery and is expected to be out for four to five months. Previously, Pope dislocated his shoulder while playing for Burnley, which kept him sidelined for almost six months.

Newcastle still have three first-team goalkeepers: Dubravka, Loris Karius, and Mark Gillespie. However, none of them have been able to meet manager Eddie Howe's requirements. Therefore, the Magpies will likely need to recruit a quality goalkeeper in the upcoming January transfer window, and De Gea is a strong contender.

The former Man Utd goalkeeper has yet to find a new club since leaving Man Utd at the end of last season. In August, there were reports that De Gea had been offered a move to Saudi Arabia but he declined. Newcastle would not have to pay a transfer fee for the Spanish goalkeeper, but De Gea would demand a substantial salary.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper previously earned a weekly salary of $473,000 at Man Utd. However, De Gea is unlikely to be able to demand that amount from Newcastle. If all procedures are completed quickly, Newcastle could have De Gea's services as early as the away match against Liverpool on January 2nd.

Between now and then, the St James' Park side will play seven matches, including five Premier League games, a Champions League group stage final against Milan, and an away trip to Chelsea for the League Cup quarter-finals. Dubravka is likely to be the starting goalkeeper during this period.

Newcastle are awaiting positive news regarding Pope's injury. Further details will be provided within the next 48 hours, following scans and consultations with the medical team. Pope currently holds the record for the most clean sheets in the Premier League this season with six, one more than Andre Onana.

Newcastle's squad has been ravaged by injuries this season as they compete on multiple fronts. For their away match against Everton in Round 15, in addition to Pope, they will be without 11 other players: Dan Burn, Matt Targett, Callum Wilson, Elliot Anderson, Jacob Murphy, Sven Botman, Harvey Barnes, Javier Manquillo, Sean Longstaff, Joe Willock, and Sandro Tonali. The availability of in-form striker Anthony Gordon is also uncertain.

De Gea is a seasoned Premier League player with 415 appearances for Manchester United between 2011 and 2023. He has twice won the Golden Glove award for the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets, in the 2017-2018 and 2022-2023 seasons.
