Al Hilal's blockbuster signing of Neymar became one of the most expensive transfers in Saudi Arabian football history. However, contrary to his enormous income, the Brazilian star suffered a series of injuries and was almost unable to contribute to the team.
Neymar tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) while playing for the Brazilian national team in October 2023. He was sidelined for 370 days, undergoing a grueling recovery process. Upon returning to the pitch, the 32-year-old suffered a hamstring injury, forcing him to sit out for another extended period.
According to statistics from Give Me Sport , including salary and signing fees, Neymar costs Al Hilal €17.1 million per match, equivalent to €280,000 per minute of play. This means each of his goals is worth €120 million, while each touch of the ball costs the team an average of €306,000.

Since joining Al Hilal, Neymar has only played 7 official matches, scoring 1 goal and providing 3 assists – a very low number considering the huge investment the Saudi Arabian club has made.
Al Hilal spent 90 million euros in transfer fees to acquire Neymar from PSG in the summer of 2023, and also paid him an income of up to 150 million euros per year, including salary, bonuses, and other expenses. However, in return, the star has delivered almost no professional value.
After Neymar, Saudi Arabian football has hardly welcomed any more expensive "blockbuster" signings. This is also a valuable lesson that the country's football authorities must learn in the process of building a more attractive league.
