Al Hilal's blockbuster deal with Neymar became one of the most expensive deals in Saudi Arabia's football history. However, contrary to the huge income he received, the Brazilian star was constantly injured and could hardly contribute to the team.
Neymar tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) while playing for Brazil in October 2023. He was out of action for 370 days and had to undergo a difficult recovery process. Upon returning to the field, the 32-year-old suffered another hamstring problem, forcing him to sit out for a longer period.
According to statistics from Give Me Sport , if including salary and signing fee, Neymar costs Al Hilal up to 17.1 million euros per match, equivalent to 280,000 euros per minute of play. In other words, each of his goals is worth 120 million euros, and each touch of the ball costs the team an average of 306,000 euros.

Since joining Al Hilal, Neymar has only played 7 official matches, scoring 1 goal and having 3 assists - a number too small compared to the huge investment that the Saudi Arabian team has made.
Al Hilal spent 90 million euros in transfer fees to own Neymar from PSG in the summer of 2023, and also paid an income of up to 150 million euros per year, including salary, bonuses and other expenses. But in return, this star brought almost no professional value.
After Neymar, Saudi Arabian football has almost stopped welcoming expensive “blockbusters”. This is also an expensive lesson that the country’s football community must bear in the process of building a more attractive tournament.
