Russia warns of dirty bombs, nuclear disaster

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên06/11/2024

Russia believes that Ukraine has the ability to make dirty bombs and that attacks near the Kursk nuclear power plant could cause disasters like Chernobyl or Fukushima.

The Ukrainian military announced on November 5 that it had shot down 48 out of 79 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and two missiles launched by Russia overnight, according to Reuters. Ukraine lost track of 30 other UAVs while one returned to Russia.

Russia has also been accused of using guided bombs dropped from aircraft on the city of Kharkiv, injuring two people and damaging several buildings. In the northern province of Sumy, a drone attack damaged a gas station.

In the southern province of Zaporizhzhia, a rocket attack killed six people and injured at least 20 others. A key infrastructure facility was destroyed, but Ukrainian officials did not specify what it was.

Russia has long denied attacking civilian targets.

Russia says Ukraine can produce dirty bombs?

The Russian Defense Ministry said on November 5 that Ukraine does not have the capacity to produce nuclear weapons but can produce dirty bombs, a conventional weapon that combines explosives with radioactive materials. According to TASS, the Russian Defense Ministry said that Moscow's campaign may have prevented Kyiv from developing its nuclear program.

After separating from the Soviet Union, Ukraine voluntarily gave up its nuclear weapons to ensure security, according to Reuters.

Also on November 5, General Igor Kirillov, head of Russia's Radiation, Chemical and Biological Defense Forces, warned that Ukraine's shelling of the Kursk nuclear power plant could cause serious "irreversible" consequences like the disasters at Chernobyl and Fukushima.

Mr. Kirillov said that one of the main goals of Ukraine in sending troops to Russia's Kursk province was to seize the Kursk nuclear power plant. "As a result of the Chernobyl disaster, more than 207,500 square kilometers of territory in 17 European countries were contaminated with radioactive dust," Mr. Kirillov recalled.

Ukraine did not immediately comment on the allegations.

G7 warns Russia about North Korean soldiers

South Korea's Defense Ministry said on November 5 that more than 10,000 North Korean soldiers had arrived in Russia to support the campaign against Ukraine, with a "large number" in frontline areas in Kursk, according to Reuters.

Just hours earlier, the Pentagon said there were at least 10,000 North Korean troops in Kursk, a province bordering Ukraine, but could not verify whether the force had engaged in combat.

Ukrainian intelligence meanwhile said that about 12,000 North Korean soldiers, including 500 officers and three generals, had arrived in Russia, participating in training at five military bases.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded to questions about the above information the same day: "I can't say anything about this."

Meanwhile, the foreign ministers of the G7 group (UK, Canada, Germany, US, Japan, France and Italy) and three allies South Korea, New Zealand and Australia on November 5 expressed serious concern about the information that North Korean soldiers appeared in Russia.

“Direct support from North Korea to Russia… would mark a dangerous expansion of the conflict,” the foreign ministers said in a statement.

The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement between Russia and North Korea was signed in June. The agreement includes economic , military and technical cooperation between the two countries, and mutual military assistance in case of attack on either side.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko said on November 5 at a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Federation Council (the Russian upper house of parliament) that the agreement between the two countries does not threaten a third country and does not provide for the establishment of a military alliance, "unlike similar agreements in the West."
