Many political organizations have expressed support for Cuba and its revolutionary leader, Raul Castro.

According to the VNA correspondent in Moscow, the statement clearly states that Russia strongly opposes new attempts to subdue the Cuban people, "who for nearly 70 years have bravely defended their country's sovereignty and independence against external threats" amidst a trade, economic, financial, and most recently, energy blockade.

The Russian Foreign Ministry once again called for a negotiated solution to the differences between Havana and Washington on the basis of mutual respect, while expressing confidence that "the country will unite" around Raul Castro, and that attempts to "fabricate accusations" against him "will certainly fail." Moscow firmly rejected unilateral restrictive measures that stifle the Cuban economy.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova emphasized: "We reaffirm our firm solidarity with the fraternal Cuban people and government, and will continue to strengthen the friendly relations, mutual support, assistance and comprehensive cooperation that bind the two countries together."

According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in the Americas, on the same day, a group of MPs from the Workers' Party (PT) in the Brazilian House of Representatives expressed solidarity with Cuba and Raul Castro. The group's statement clarified that the attempt to criminalize Raul Castro is a violation of international law and national sovereignty, as well as the sovereignty of the Latin American and Caribbean region.

For its part, Guatemala's United National Revolutionary Party (URNG) also condemned the threat of military intervention as well as all forms of economic coercion and judicial repression by the United States against Cuba. Meanwhile, Spain's United Left Alliance (IU) condemned the US prosecution of Raul Castro.

Regarding the US accusations against Raul Castro, in a recent editorial, the Mexican newspaper La Jornada commented that allowing Washington to continue acting arbitrarily would mean completely abandoning "the last remnants of international law."

On May 20, the US Department of Justice announced an indictment against General Raul Castro Ruz, the leader of the Cuban Revolution, in connection with the shooting down of two aircraft piloted by the Miami-based organization "Brothers to the Rescue" over Cuban airspace in February 1996.

On the same day, the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) announced that the USS Nimitz carrier strike group had entered the Caribbean Sea. According to a U.S. official, the Trump administration plans to keep the USS Nimitz strike group in the Caribbean for at least several days.

The Cuban government issued a statement strongly condemning the US Department of Justice's accusations as lacking legality and authority, reaffirming its commitment to peace and its unwavering determination to exercise its inalienable right to self-defense, recognized by the United Nations Charter.
