On the same day, speaking on the sidelines of the United Nations Food Systems Conference in Rome, Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said: "We believe that we must find an agreement because the problem is not the conflict between Russia and Ukraine but the African countries that are being left without grain.
We support any initiative, Turkish or any intermediate initiative."
* Previously, on July 24, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that it was "unacceptable" to accept any move by the European Union (EU) to prolong restrictions on Kiev's grain.
“Any extension of restrictive measures is absolutely unacceptable,” Mr Zelensky said on social media. “The EU has the institutional capacity to react in a more rational way than closing the border to a particular commodity.”
The head of Ukraine said he hoped the EU "will fulfil its obligations" after current restrictions on the Eastern European country's grain expire on September 15.
Ukraine's European neighbours have called on the EU to extend its ban on grain imports until the end of the year, with countries concerned that local farmers will be hit by the possibility that Ukrainian grain may not reach its "necessary" destinations.
