Russian engineers develop Bumblebee micro-UAV to compete with UK. |
Recently, the Russian Ministry of Defense decided to establish the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Center at Novosibirsk Federal Technical University (NSTU). This organization is tasked with conducting research and developing UAVs for the Russian military.
Exclusive domestic production
On March 5, in an interview with RT (Russia), Mr. Denis Kotin - head of NSTU said: "The center is implementing the Bumblebee micro-UAV project, similar to the British product Black Hornet. Currently, the Bumblebee micro-UAV has reached the testing stage, and is expected to conduct official experimental flights in June-July 2023."
Although considered a promising project, the manufacturer also encountered difficulties in terms of size and weight restrictions. In addition, production also requires high technology, as well as specialized materials and tools.
With the simulation of foreign compact UAV models, the Bumblebee micro UAV can carry a video camera and transmit live signals. The micro drone is designed for reconnaissance, so they will have to operate in bad weather conditions. Due to their small size, they cannot fly too high like other conventional UAVs, but they operate effectively in narrow terrain such as buildings, tunnels, ... and transmit information by radio signals.
A distinctive feature and advantage of the Bumblebee micro-UAV is its stealth. The device is very small in size and makes almost no noise, so it is very difficult for the enemy to detect and hit the target in the air. When encountering risky situations, the Bumblebee micro-UAV can be quickly destroyed without causing many serious consequences.
Compact, difficult to distinguish from toy models
According to the design, a Bumblebee micro-UAV complex includes a camera-carrying UAV, a control panel, a removable battery, and a charging station. The small weight and size of the product set will allow the operator to easily carry it with him without affecting other equipment and weapons.
The weight of the Bumblebee micro UAV is about 85 grams. Due to its small size, the Bumblebee micro UAV can only reach a maximum speed of 25 km/h when moving. The operating range is within a radius of 1-2 km and the flight time is about 20 minutes without recharging.
The engine and reconnaissance system operate entirely on rechargeable batteries. The Bumblebee micro-UAV is equipped with a video camera mounted on the shell, integrated with day and night modes. The video signal during flight will be transmitted directly to the operator via a smartphone or tablet with specialized software installed.
There are suggestions that the Bumblebee micro-UAV will soon find a place in military units or law enforcement agencies because it can operate independently or support other combat UAVs. In reconnaissance situations, it will support soldiers' intelligence work.
Therefore, the successful development of the Bumblebee micro-UAV will bring a number of important results. First of all, the military and law enforcement agencies will be able to receive a completely new type of unmanned aerial system that can support intelligence and surveillance.
In addition, the Bumblebee micro-UAV project will be useful for the Russian defense industry in general and the drone manufacturing industry in particular. This Bumblebee micro-UAV promises to create the premise for the development of subsequent UAV models, and especially in the ultra-light weapon segment.
