Ensuring a strong start.
According to Dr. Tran Thi Hoang, Deputy Director of Da Nang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, the breast milk bank is like a mother's love for her child, always abundant and overflowing with affection. For every child, breast milk is indispensable on their journey to adulthood. The establishment of the Da Nang Breast Milk Bank has made a significant contribution to ensuring access to safe breast milk for newborns and young children who are not breastfed, giving them a strong start in life.
Every day, at Da Nang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital and other medical facilities in and outside the city, dozens of children are being revived and developing on breast milk from the Da Nang Breast Milk Bank. At Da Nang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, we encountered 15-day-old baby N. (from Da Nang) being incubated using the Kangaroo method.
According to doctors, baby N. was a premature baby, underweight, suffering from respiratory distress, and had to be temporarily separated from her mother's arms shortly after birth... However, after a period of using donated breast milk from the Da Nang Breast Milk Bank, baby N. has recovered and is developing well.
Another premature baby, T. ( from Quang Ngai ), also experienced a remarkable recovery thanks to donated breast milk. Compared to other premature babies, T. was considered to have adapted well to the milk, with her health improving significantly just three days after birth. Prior to this, her mother suffered from numerous health problems and required emergency surgery to deliver the baby and save her own life.
According to the leaders of Da Nang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, infants who are not breastfed in the first six months have a 14 times higher risk of dying compared to those who are breastfed. This doesn't even account for infants with intestinal diseases, infections, etc., who are even more difficult to treat without breast milk.
When the Da Nang Breast Milk Bank opened its doors to receive donated breast milk, those worries and anxieties seemed to subside. Thanks to the breast milk bank, many children in the hospital received adequate breast milk support. Some babies used the bank's milk 100% from birth, while others received partial support when their mothers experienced milk deficiency.
Share the sweet moments
According to the leadership of Da Nang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, the hospital handles 13,000 to 15,000 births annually. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit alone receives 3,000 to 4,000 vulnerable infants who are ill, premature, underweight, or abandoned. The majority of these infants do not receive breast milk from their own mothers during critical moments.

To provide the nourishing and life-saving benefits of breast milk for underprivileged newborns, hundreds of mothers have volunteered to donate breast milk to the Da Nang Breast Milk Bank. Among the mothers who donated breast milk is Ms. TTHT (24 years old, residing in Da Nang).
Despite giving birth prematurely, Ms. T. volunteered to donate several liters of breast milk to the breast milk bank. Ms. T. gave birth when her baby was only 6.5 months old (26 weeks). From the moment of birth, the baby was not as fortunate as other babies… At that time, she didn't get to see her child, didn't get to hear her baby cry, only vaguely heard that the baby weighed just over 800 grams…
But in the days that followed, her child was fortunate to receive dedicated care from the doctors and nurses at Da Nang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital.
"Thanks to the dedicated and attentive care of the doctors and nurses, my child overcame the challenging first days thanks to the sweet milk from the breast milk bank. Also, thanks to the advice and support of the medical staff, I successfully stimulated my milk production. During my child's time in the hospital, after each breastfeeding session, I was able to express an additional 200ml, and on some days I donated more than 1 liter of milk to the breast milk bank," Ms. T said.
The Da Nang Breast Milk Bank and its satellite breast milk banks, established with the collective efforts of the community, have contributed to providing perfect nutrition for children. These banks are not only places to provide pasteurized donated breast milk for premature and sick infants, but also symbolize humanity and the optimal choice for the health of both mother and child.
“Donating breast milk to a breast milk bank is a way to share sweetness – to share love with unfortunate children who, on their journey through life, lack the warmth and sweetness of their biological mother's milk. The journey of caring for a healthy child is not only the work of doctors, nurses, parents, and grandparents, but also the contribution of loving drops from the community,” said Dr. Tran Thi Hoang.
After more than 8 years of operation, the Da Nang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital's breast milk bank has received milk donations from 729 mothers (393 from the hospital and 336 from the community). The total amount of donated milk is 15,830 liters, of which 13,113 liters are pasteurized and have been used by 44,755 children.
