Journalism and Communication major: High scores remain a hot commodity.

During the 2023 admissions season, the entrance scores for Journalism and Communication majors at many universities nationwide were near perfect scores. For example, the entrance score for Journalism at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) ranged from 25.5 to 28.5 points. In previous years, Journalism and Communication majors consistently ranked among the top majors with the highest entrance scores.

Speaking about the appeal of this field, Dr. Phan Van Kien, Director of the Institute of Journalism and Communication Training, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi ) , explained that with the development of digital technology and the increase in society's demand for information, it is understandable that journalism and communication training programs become "hot" fields in each enrollment season.

Given the intense competition in digital media, Dr. Vu Tuan Anh, Head of the Department of Communication and External Culture (Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam) , stated that the demand for media professionals in companies and corporations is currently high.

In particular, the development of digital media, as well as social media, has further propelled the media industry to prominence. Therefore, at this stage and for the next 5-7 years, media will remain a "hot" industry.

Regarding the early admission requirements for the International Communication major (Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam) in 2024, Dr. Vu Tuan Anh stated that candidates with an IELTS score of 7.0 have very little chance of being admitted, and even those with an IELTS score of 7.5 face high competition, with over 1,000 applications at this score level.

This shows that the International Communication major at the Diplomatic Academy has very high English proficiency requirements for admission and is considered an advantage for Diplomatic Academy students after graduation.

"In my opinion, to prepare well for future careers, equipping oneself with fundamental skills is extremely necessary. In today's digital transformation era, journalism students need to master information technology and multimedia tools to produce content professionally."

Analytical skills have become more essential than ever to ensure accurate and well-founded information. In addition, creative writing, editing, and critical thinking are core skills that help me produce engaging and valuable articles. A thorough understanding of professional ethics and laws related to journalism helps me work more responsibly."

"Some students have published dozens of papers in their first year. They have the opportunity to gain work experience very early on and receive adjustments and guidance throughout their studies. By their fourth year, students will have clear career paths."

However, what I need to clarify is that the knowledge provided by the department is only basic. Depending on their abilities and strengths, students will have to self-study and pursue more in-depth training. Early exposure to real-world work will help them understand what knowledge they need to acquire to be competitive in the job market," shared Dr. Vu Tuan Anh.

With over 30 years of specialized training in journalism and communication, according to the leaders of the Institute of Journalism and Communication (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi), the Institute's training philosophy for journalists is to equip them with a strong foundation in social sciences and humanities.

To get started quickly in the profession, students may focus on immediate skills, but for long-term success, a solid foundation of knowledge is essential. This is not to downplay professional skills, but rather to highlight the crucial role of foundational knowledge in a journalist's career.

Furthermore, journalism training must keep pace with the trends of the times, especially technological trends. Therefore, the undergraduate training program of the Institute of Journalism and Communication has incorporated knowledge and skills such as multimedia communication, social media communication, convergent communication, etc., into its curriculum.

After receiving advice and learning about the Communication major's training program, I found that job opportunities in this field are quite broad, not limited to newspapers and television stations, but also include working for private companies, agencies, etc.

By choosing a program based on the Australian curriculum, my classmates and I will have the opportunity to intern at businesses and companies from our first year, gaining access to internationally standardized knowledge in the field of communication. The English-language curriculum also offers an advantage for students majoring in Communication.
