According to the city's health sector development orientation for the period 2021-2030 and vision to 2050, Da Nang will become the core of a specialized medical center, providing high-quality medical examination and treatment in the Central Highlands region and the whole country; forming and developing medical tourism products.

Recently, Da Nang has been investing in facilities, equipment and high-quality human resources. The investment and development of high-tech and specialized healthcare helps people enjoy many modern medical services and techniques, improving public health care.

Investing in modern equipment and synchronous infrastructure

Da Nang's public health facilities have now been synchronously invested in infrastructure and equipment. According to the Da Nang Department of Health, from 2020 to present, Da Nang Hospital, Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital, and Oncology Hospital have deployed many new techniques in examining and treating patients.

As a specialized medical facility in the field of cancer in the Central Highlands region, each year, Da Nang Oncology Hospital receives nearly 46,000 inpatients, with a bed occupancy rate of 135%.

The unit has deployed 60 new techniques; including stem cell transplantation, which was performed for the first time in Da Nang. Recently, the hospital has put into use a number of modern devices in cancer diagnosis and treatment, providing clear images, supporting the detection of lesions in the body.

These solutions help address hospital overcrowding amid the growing number of cancer cases.

According to Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hung, Director of Da Nang Oncology Hospital, to meet the increasing demand for health care for the people, the hospital has gradually deployed many advanced techniques in the diagnosis and intensive treatment of cancer diseases.

Along with that, the unit keeps up with the trend in developing specialized medical services, focusing on developing infrastructure, implementing the project to build a treatment area requiring cancer screening with a scale of 400 beds.

At Da Nang Hospital, the Center for Neurosurgery, Trauma - Plastic Burns and the Center for Organ Transplantation - Stem Cell Transplantation have been handed over and put into use.

These are two key medical projects approved for investment by the People's Committee of Da Nang City in 2019 with a total cost of nearly 1,000 billion VND.

Center for neurosurgery, trauma and plastic burns with a scale of about 407 beds. The center meets the expansion and intensive treatment of diseases of the cranial nerves, spinal nerves, upper limb injuries, lower limb injuries, plastic burns combined with rehabilitation exercises and a system of service treatment areas requiring spaciousness and modernity.

Organ and stem cell transplant center with a scale of about 422 beds. The project is completed to improve quality, early application and use of advanced techniques in organ and stem cell transplant.

The center has a modern operating room system and an organ transplant and stem cell transplant area with internationally-standard equipment, meeting the increasing demands in health care and treatment for the people.

This is also an important motivation and foundation for the Da Nang Health sector to improve the quality of medical examination and treatment in the direction of strong general practice, deep specialization and international integration.

Doctor Le Duc Nhan, Director of Da Nang Hospital, shared that the hospital has deployed advanced techniques but they are not synchronous and there is no connection between units and facilities.

When the two centers are put into operation, the unit will separate some specialized departments and establish better specialized support units. This will create conditions for people in Da Nang city and the Central Highlands provinces to enjoy advanced, high-tech medical services; at the same time, reduce treatment costs and burdens for the people.

Da Nang will develop the Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital, the Oncology Hospital, and the Eye Hospital into city-level specialized hospitals that undertake regional functions and provide health care for the people of Da Nang and the region.

Training of specialized medical human resources

In addition to investing in technical equipment and infrastructure, Da Nang focuses on training and developing highly qualified medical human resources to serve the implementation of advanced, specialized techniques and receive transfer of international standard medical techniques.

Training of medical personnel has been and is being implemented. Specifically, in 2024, with the support of the Da Nang People's Committee and other units, Da Nang Hospital sent 12 staff to receive training and improve their professional skills in the United States and Japan, and 26 staff to participate in liver transplant training courses at the 108 Military Central Hospital.

According to Dr. Tran Thanh Thuy, Director of the Da Nang Department of Health, the city will develop Da Nang Hospital into a special-class hospital, a general hospital with regional functions, and a national coordination center for human organ transplants by 2030.

The locality develops specialized centers in Da Nang Hospital to provide specialized technical services to people in the Central Highlands region. Therefore, training high-quality medical human resources is prioritized and creating conditions for doctors and nurses to access modern technology transfer.

Implementing the decision of the People's Committee of Da Nang City on implementing the policy of developing high-quality human resources in the public sector, Da Nang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital focuses on training and improving the professional qualifications of the medical staff.

In the past, the unit has sent 5 medical staff for postgraduate training abroad, 19 individuals to participate in short-term training courses abroad... The hospital has been approved for 2 training courses "Pediatric pre- and post-operative diagnosis and treatment team" and "Prenatal diagnosis and intervention team" in the United States.

Doctor Tran Dinh Vinh, Director of Da Nang Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital, said that in addition to high-quality training plans, every year the hospital sends staff to participate in specialized training courses and teams.

The unit invites domestic and foreign experts and reporters to share experiences, update information and new knowledge in the fields of obstetrics, pediatrics, and nursing care for the medical team, doctors and staff. This is a proactive move to create favorable conditions for the medical team and doctors to improve their professional capacity.

The Oncology Hospital also regularly cooperates with the Saiseikei Organization of Japan and the International Gynecological Cancer Society (IGCS) to train doctors annually. Online scientific seminars with experts from the United States, Singapore, and Israel are held monthly, contributing to improving expertise and updating international knowledge for medical staff.

Currently, the hospital has 2 doctors selected and trained by the International Gynecological Cancer Society (IGCS) to become international gynecologists.

Da Nang Health strives to have at least 2 specialized hospitals meeting regional standards by 2030; upgrade a number of specialized hospitals capable of providing specialized technical services to meet the health care needs of people in the city and the Central Highlands region.

In particular, the city has developed a number of modern, high-tech specialized hospitals on par with those of advanced countries./.
