Drinking warm lemon water in the morning: Good for kidney disease or harmful?

Lemon water can provide a variety of health benefits, from aiding digestion to improving blood sugar control. Many health-conscious people make a habit of drinking warm lemon water in the morning.

And the question often asked by kidney patients is: Is lemon good or bad for kidney disease?

Here, Dr. Prashant Dheerendra, a famous Indian nephrologist who used to work at the Narayana Hrudayalaya hospital system, will answer this question.

Dr. Dheerendra's answer is, "Yes," since lemons are rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and citric acid, drinking lemon water is not dangerous for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Here are some benefits of lemon related to kidney disease.

Prevent kidney stones. The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) notes that the citric acid in lemons can help prevent kidney stones. According to the organization, 1 in 10 people have developed kidney stones. Lemons are high in citrate, a substance that can help prevent the formation of the most common type of kidney stone, calcium oxalate.

Research shows that people with a history of kidney stones who drink 1/2 cup of lemon juice every day have a lower risk of developing kidney stones again. Therefore, the NKF recommends drinking lemon juice every day to prevent kidney stones, especially if you have had kidney stones in the past.

Overall, drinking lemon water does not worsen the condition of CKD patients.

However, consuming too much lemon can cause some other health problems such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea due to consuming too much vitamin C. The next content of this article will be on the health page on August 1 .

Heart failure: symptoms during sleep should not be ignored

Heart failure is a condition in which the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body's needs. And many warning signs of heart failure appear most clearly at night.

Heart failure should be checked if the following symptoms appear during sleep:

Shortness of breath when lying down. One of the common signs of heart failure is shortness of breath when lying down, forcing the patient to prop themselves up on pillows or sleep sitting up to make breathing easier. This is due to fluid buildup in the lungs that makes breathing difficult.

Due to fluid accumulation in the lungs, heart failure patients must keep their heads elevated to make breathing easier.

When you stand, gravity helps blood flow to the lower part of your body. But when you lie down, more of this blood flows to your heart. A weakened heart cannot pump this blood effectively, causing it to pool in your lungs and make you feel suffocated.

Waking up suddenly with breathlessness. Paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea is a condition in which a person suddenly wakes up from sleep with a feeling of breathlessness. This feeling can last from minutes to hours, often occurring in the middle of the night, causing the person to sit up or get out of bed to breathe easier.

Cough, wheezing at night. People with heart failure often have a persistent cough, especially at night. This is not a cough caused by a sore throat or flu, but is a result of fluid buildup in the lungs. The cough is usually dry, and in severe cases, it will be accompanied by pink phlegm due to blood.

Nighttime wheezing is often confused with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The difference is that people with heart failure will have additional symptoms such as leg swelling, fatigue, and shortness of breath when lying down. Find out how to eat to help protect the heart and brain of the elderly

A major study just published in the scientific journal Nature Aging has found a diet that helps older adults avoid chronic disease.

Aging is a major risk factor for chronic diseases, especially cardiovascular disease and neurological disorders. Therefore, promoting healthy aging and healthy longevity is a top priority in public health .

The study, led by the Karolinska Institute and Stockholm University (Sweden), in collaboration with the Del Mar Hospital Research Institute, Carlos III Health Institute, Pompeu Fabra University and Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in Spain, followed 2,473 people aged 60 and over for more than 15 years.

Participants’ diets were assessed through regular questionnaires and analyzed based on their adherence to four diets, three of which were considered healthy and one of which was considered inflammatory. Chronic disease status was monitored through health assessments, focusing on cardiovascular, neuropsychiatric, and musculoskeletal disease.

Results showed that all three healthy diets were effective in delaying chronic diseases, especially heart disease and neurological disorders.

These healthy diets all have in common that they prioritize plant-based foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and healthy fats, while limiting red meat, processed meat, and sugary drinks. Start your day with health news to see more of this article!
