Fifty-four ethnic groups in the Vietnamese ethnic community with cultural characteristics such as festivals, customs, beliefs, languages, writing, behavior... have created a beautiful cultural identity for the country.
Therefore, since 2008, the Prime Minister has issued Decision 1668, taking April 19 every year as the Day of Vietnamese Ethnic Culture so that this unique culture continues to be honored and preserved!
Diverse Kinh - Khmer - Chinese nuances
The three ethnic groups Kinh - Khmer - Hoa with their own cultural nuances combine to form the cultural beauty of Bac Lieu , which is both unique and contributes to the diversity of the common culture of the 54 ethnic groups of Vietnam.
Although each ethnic group has its own cultural characteristics, there is always an exchange. In the joyful and bustling atmosphere of typical festivals in Bac Lieu such as: Ky Yen, Thanh Minh, Nghinh Ong, Ooc-om-boc, Da co hoai lang..., one can realize one thing, in each festival, not only does one ethnic group participate but there is always a response from all! Tet Nguyen Dan, Chol-chnam-thmay, Ky Yen... are all enthusiastically welcomed by Kinh, Khmer and Hoa people! It is not only a natural exchange of national solidarity, but deeper and more sacred because there is also a relationship of blood and affection: many families in Bac Lieu have all three ethnic groups mixed in blood.
Researcher Tran Phuoc Thuan - Chairman of Bac Lieu Folk Arts Association, shared: “It is easy to recognize the cultural exchange in Bac Lieu. Here, many festivals of each ethnic group are no longer the separate festivals of any ethnic group but are blended into a common festival. Each ethnic group shares joy together in that joyful atmosphere, as if showing the tightening of solidarity to develop the homeland together”.
Dramatizing that spirit of solidarity and cooperation are also the performances imbued with brotherhood of the three ethnic groups on stage to celebrate political events and holidays in Bac Lieu.
The culture of Vietnamese ethnic groups has been formed, interwoven and developed throughout the history of the nation. It is the crystallization of a long process of labor and creativity to create a rich and beautiful culture, unified in diversity, creating a culture rich in identity!

Interact to develop
In the series of events of the Bac Lieu Culture - Tourism Festival held in recent years, there has always been the activity "Cultural space of Vietnamese ethnic groups". There, many art forms of ethnic groups across the country are shown. Most recently, on the stage of the opening art program of the Vietnam - Bac Lieu Salt Festival in 2025, there was also the Mo Muong ritual - a unique ritual of the Muong ethnic group in the northern provinces, which was also introduced so that Bac Lieu people could learn more about a unique belief and ritual of one of their 54 ethnic groups.
That is, Bac Lieu has deeply realized that the task of preserving and promoting national cultural values is the responsibility and obligation of everyone to build the homeland and country to become increasingly rich, beautiful, civilized, ensuring the preservation of the nation's fine cultural traditions, while absorbing the quintessence of human culture in the integration period.
Cultural traditions are the source of the nation's strength in building and defending the country. 54 ethnic groups, from the time of land reclamation, joined hands to build, fight, and protect every inch of their homeland during wartime until peacetime, joined hands and hearts to develop the country, and together built an extremely valuable multi-ethnic heritage! That exchange, assimilation, and development have created the richness, diversity, and unity of Vietnamese culture.
“Culture lights the way for the nation”, preserving and promoting the cultural values of Vietnamese ethnic groups is also a very important political task. The annual Vietnamese Ethnic Culture Day is a time to remind more deeply the message of preserving, protecting and developing a Vietnamese culture rich in identity, and each ethnic group is an extended arm. Together promoting cultural traditions is contributing to consolidating and strengthening the strength of the great national unity bloc.
