Báo Dân SinhBáo Dân Sinh23/11/2023

Ms. Dao Thi Oanh's family is facing extreme hardship, with her husband paralyzed for many years due to a work accident, her father-in-law suffering from lung cancer, her elderly mother-in-law constantly ill, and three young children still in school. She herself is a factory worker, and her salary is insufficient to support the entire family.

That was the situation of the family of Ms. Dao Thi Oanh (born in 1985) in Phu Xuan hamlet, Trung Phuc Cuong commune, Nam Dan district ( Nghe An province ). Six years ago, although her family was somewhat poor, they still had enough to live on.

Then one day, her husband, Tran Van Binh, who was a betel nut trader, unfortunately fell while climbing a betel nut tree to pick nuts. After the accident, he became paralyzed from head to toe and was bedridden. Since then, she has been working as a factory worker alone to support the whole family.

A few years ago, Oanh's father-in-law, Mr. Tran Van Kinh (66 years old), was diagnosed with lung cancer. Mrs. Nguyen Thi Li (72 years old), Oanh's mother-in-law, used to help with some housework, but since falling and breaking her arm, she has been constantly ill and can no longer help much.

She tried everything she could, but still couldn't find enough money for food and medicine for her husband and father-in-law, almost exhausting her entire factory worker's salary.

Mr. Tran Van Dung, a neighbor, said: "This family is in a terrible situation. People in the neighborhood give whatever they can, but they don't have much to give. Ms. Oanh, a factory worker earning just over 4 million VND a month, has to support seven mouths to feed, pay for medicine for her husband and father-in-law, and school fees for her children… She cries all the time, it's so sad…"

In the dilapidated shack, filled only with old clothes and two broken bicycles, Mrs. Li sat by the bed, occasionally wiping away the saliva dripping from Mr. Binh's mouth with a handkerchief. Mr. Binh was deaf and lay motionless in one place.

Ms. Oanh choked up, saying, "Before, when my husband was healthy, we had enough to eat. Now he's sick and bedridden, and my parents are also ill. I have no way to escape this situation. There are all kinds of expenses, from books to school fees; I have to borrow money from everywhere just to buy things for my children to go to school. Every time I hear someone calling at the gate, I jump, thinking they're coming to collect debts."

Mr. Nguyen An Toan, Chairman of the People's Committee of Trung Phuc Cuong commune, said: "Mr. Binh's family is in a terrible situation. They were already poor before, and now the whole family is sick. The commune always prioritizes Mr. Binh's family when there are any benefits. But honestly, there isn't much; during holidays and Tet (Lunar New Year), we only receive small gifts and visits. We hope that philanthropists and kind-hearted people will help Ms. Oanh's family..."
