As the temperature outside rises, the need to enjoy a cold can of beer becomes popular. However, the refrigerator is not always ready or has enough time to cool as desired - Photo: AI
According to test results from consumer consultancy Which? (UK), the most effective way to cool beer today is to soak it in a mixture of ice and salt.
Under experimental conditions, a bottle of room temperature beer (20.5°C) was immersed in a bucket of ice-cold water and about 100g of salt. After 30 minutes, the beer's temperature dropped to 1.6°C, colder than any other method, including placing the beer in a freezer.
If left in this solution for 1 hour, the temperature can drop below 0°C, the ideal cold level to enjoy beer.
Explaining this phenomenon, experts said: when salt is added to ice, it lowers the freezing point of the water. This allows the salt-ice mixture to reach a temperature below 0°C without completely freezing. As a result, the heat from the beer is transferred faster and the cooling effect is significantly increased.
In Which?'s test , the team compared nine different cooling methods. The results were summarized as follows:
Method | Temperature after 30 minutes |
Leave it natural | 21°C |
Rinse under cold water | 18°C |
Soak in cold water | 18°C |
Soak in cold water + cover with wet towel | 17.2°C |
Keep in the refrigerator | 16.9°C |
Wrap in wet towel and put in freezer | 8.9°C |
Place directly in freezer | 7.8°C |
Soak in water + ice | 3.9°C |
Soak in water + ice + salt | 1.6°C |
In addition to beer, the ice and salt cooling method is also effective for soft drinks, fruit juices, and bottled or canned mineral water. However, users should also note: if using a freezer, a timer should be set to prevent the beer from freezing or exploding.
While cold beer is an appealing choice on hot days, health experts recommend moderation. Overconsumption of beer or unhygienic combinations of beer and ice can have negative health effects.
