Following days of rough seas due to Typhoon No. 1, fishermen in the province are urgently heading out to sea to fish, hoping for a high yield in the southern fishing season. At fishing ports such as Cua Viet and Cua Viet Market, dozens of fishing boats dock at the port every day from early morning to unload seafood, refuel, restock ice, and prepare fishing gear... in readiness for the next fishing trip.

Participating in offshore fishing, Mr. Nguyen Van Long from Phu Hoi village, Trieu Tan commune, Trieu Phong district, captain of fishing vessel QT 90063TS, engaged in purse seine and squid fishing, said that since the beginning of the southern fishing season, his vessel has made more than 10 trips and consistently yielded good catches. Each trip brings in 4-5 tons of various seafood, generating an income of 130-150 million VND. After deducting expenses, each crew member receives 7-8 million VND per month.

According to Mr. Long, in previous seasons, the catch was usually higher in July and August, so he and other fishermen are hoping for more bountiful fishing trips from now until the end of the southern fishing season, catching higher-value seafood such as tuna and squid... "If more schools of fish appear in the coming days, the catch and economic efficiency will certainly be higher," Mr. Long affirmed.

Meanwhile, at the Cua Viet fishing port, Mr. Nguyen Quang Hung, captain of fishing vessel QT 94522TS, who fishes using purse seine nets, is refueling in preparation for the next fishing trip. Mr. Hung said that for fishermen, the southern fishing season is the most important fishing season of the year due to favorable weather, calm seas, and abundant schools of fish.

With his fishing boat, since the beginning of the year, he has made 4-5 trips per month, each trip lasting 2-5 days, mainly catching anchovies. This year's southern fishing season, in addition to more favorable fishing grounds than last year, he also focused on applying technology in fishing and upgrading fishing gear, so on average, each trip brings in about 100 million VND in income. "Not only does it bring economic benefits to my family, but the 14 crew members working on the boat also earn 12-15 million VND/month depending on the catch," Mr. Hung said.

According to Mr. Tran Thanh Binh, an officer at the fisheries control office at Cua Viet fishing port, the current period is the peak of the southern fishing season. Thanks to the abundant catch of various seafood species and stable prices, fishermen are very enthusiastic and have more motivation to venture out to sea. Mr. Binh said that, based on monitoring the vessel tracking system, there are currently about 100 fishing vessels belonging to fishermen in the province operating at sea.

To support fishermen, in addition to inspecting and controlling regulations against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, the office has closely coordinated with fishing ports in deploying personnel on duty 24/7 to arrange and guide vessels entering and leaving ports and to arrange locations for transport vehicles to unload seafood conveniently.

Starting in April and lasting until September each year, the southern fishing season is one of the main fishing seasons for fishermen. According to statistics from the Fisheries Department, the province currently has over 2,400 fishing vessels of all types with a total capacity of over 124,000 horsepower, of which 774 vessels are 6 meters or longer.

Since the beginning of the southern fishing season, the weather has been relatively favorable for fishing activities. Fishermen have actively ventured out to sea and engaged in production, with many fishing vessels achieving high yields, especially those using purse seine, trawl, mixed gillnet, and herring gillnet fishing. The total seafood catch in the first six months of the year reached nearly 14,300 tons, achieving 47.5% of the plan.

According to Phan Huu Thang, head of the Fisheries Sub-Department, to achieve the set plan, the unit has coordinated with coastal localities to mobilize fishing vessels for the southern fishing season; provided information on fishing grounds, aquatic resources, and consumer markets so that fishermen can proactively plan and organize production. They have also intensified propaganda and training on the exploitation and development of aquatic resources; guided fishermen in applying science and technology in fishing and post-harvest product preservation technology to improve product quality and value.

Promote new fishing techniques for purse seine, trawl, and gillnet fishing; utilize LED lighting technology to save fuel; apply hydraulic winches, autopilots, and sonar to reduce costs and labor. Organize fishing activities at sea into cooperative groups and teams to support each other in production in fishing grounds; promote offshore fishing logistics services such as purchasing seafood, supplying fuel, and providing necessities directly at sea and on islands to increase fishing efficiency and reduce production costs.

Mr. Thang added that, along with encouraging fishermen to venture out to sea to exploit the southern fishing season, the agriculture and environment sector is also focusing on the synchronized implementation of legal regulations on fisheries management, especially implementing the directives of the central government and the recommendations of the European Commission (EC) on combating IUU fishing.

In particular, violations related to fishing zones, the use of poisons, explosives, and electric shocks, and fishing without permits are strictly monitored. Fishing vessels operating at sea are closely tracked and monitored through vessel tracking systems, and violations are promptly addressed and prevented in all maritime areas, especially foreign waters. The handling of violations by fishing vessels entering and leaving fishing ports is intensified, and the monitoring of seafood catches passing through ports is carried out to ensure reliable traceability, complete record-keeping, and proper storage of records.
