Present at the cultural exchange organized by the People's Committee of Nam Nung commune (Krong No), with a simple, neat outfit and a cat flute, the performance "Spring comes to the Mong village" was played passionately by veteran Dinh Xuan Dong. The flute's melodious, flowing sound, sometimes high-pitched, sometimes low-pitched, all like a symphony, stirring up memories of the homeland...
Mr. Huynh Cong Nga, Dak Mam town happily said: “I really like listening to Uncle Dong’s flute, the flute sounds melodious and makes me feel peaceful. Each performance he performs expresses the emotions of the author as well as the performer.”
Born and raised in a family with no artistic tradition, Mr. Dinh Xuan Dong had a talent for art since childhood. Every time he saw his older brothers and sisters playing the flute or the monochord, he was fascinated by every sound, carefully watching his fingers holding the keys and then getting lost in it without realizing it. From then on, veteran Dinh Xuan Dong diligently learned to play the flute and quickly became successful. The flute became an inseparable part of his life.
When he was just 18 years old, he joined the army and worked at the Art Troupe of Military Region 3, regularly performing for military units in battlefields, especially the Route 9 - Khe Sanh battlefield. He played both single and double flutes skillfully. Here, being able to stand on stage and perform for officers and soldiers to listen to music was his happiness. When peace was restored, he transferred to work at Ha Bac Radio Station as a cultural reporter.
Due to war injuries, in 1984 he retired and moved to Dak Nong to start a business and live. In his new homeland, in addition to taking care of labor and economic development, veteran Dinh Xuan Dong regularly participated in local cultural activities. With simple bamboo flute, cat flute and erhu, each melody performed by veteran Dinh Xuan Dong was praised by many people.
Although he is over 82 years old this year, veteran Dinh Xuan Dong is a core and active member of the Dak Mam town Intergenerational Arts Club. At competitions and performances organized by all levels, Mr. Dong always registered to perform bamboo flute-related pieces, winning many high prizes such as 1 A prize and 1 B prize with the pieces "Northwest Love Song", "Spring Comes to the Mong Village" at the Dak Nong Province Mass Arts Festival in 2017; the piece "Erhu Solo" also won B prize at the Dak Nong Province Elderly Arts Festival...
CCB Dinh Xuan Dong shared: “Playing the flute is like practicing qigong, deep breathing is good for health, the fingertips are also very flexible. Playing the double cat flute requires strong breath, knowing how to hold the breath, hold the breath to blow evenly. The sound of the flute is like the sound of the mountains and forests, of the golden season, of love between couples... and I love the sound of the flute, consider the flute as my inseparable object. The sound of the flute reminds me of my comrades as well as the memories of my time on the battlefield. As long as I have the strength, I will continue to play the flute...”.
