According to GizChina , good news for global smartphone users when the GSM Association (GSMA), the organization representing mobile network operators, has just announced an important new standard for the RCS (Rich Communication Services) messaging protocol. This standard for the first time allows conversations between Android phones and iPhones to be truly end-to-end encrypted (E2EE), eliminating the long-standing security gap.

For a long time, iPhone users have benefited from iMessage’s end-to-end encryption. Similarly, Android users using Google Messages are protected by end-to-end encryption when texting RCS messages to each other. However, when iPhone and Android users text each other, the messages often fall back to the old SMS/MMS standard and are completely unencrypted, raising privacy and security concerns.
The new RCS standard issued by GSMA, with the consensus of technology giants including Apple, Google, Xiaomi and many others, will completely solve the above problem. This standard applies MLS (Message Layer Security) technology to provide E2EE end-to-end encryption for both RCS conversations between Android and iPhone. This ensures that only the sender and the recipient can read the message content, protecting them from the prying eyes of hackers, service providers or any other third parties.
For Xiaomi phone users in particular and Android users in general, this is a huge step forward in security. In the near future, they can confidently text their friends and family using iPhones without worrying about whether the content is leaked or not.
The encryption process will be completely automatic, without users having to perform any complicated settings, providing a more seamless and secure messaging experience. Pioneering support for the new standard also clearly demonstrates Xiaomi's commitment to customer privacy and security.
Apple has started supporting RCS in iOS 18 since late 2024, but that’s just the beginning. The company’s participation and support for the new RCS standard, which integrates cross-platform E2EE, is the key. While Apple has confirmed its plans to implement it, a specific date has not been announced. This industry-wide move also resonates with Google’s continued push for a modern, secure messaging platform to replace SMS.
