According to GizChina , there's good news for global smartphone users as the GSMA, the organization representing mobile carriers, has just announced a new and important standard for the RCS (Rich Communication Services) messaging protocol. This standard, for the first time, allows conversations between Android and iPhone phones to be truly secure end-to-end encrypted (E2EE), bridging a long-standing security gap.

For a long time, iPhone users have benefited from iMessage's end-to-end encryption. Similarly, Android users using Google Messages are also protected by end-to-end encryption when messaging each other using RCS. However, when iPhone and Android users text each other, these messages often revert to the old SMS/MMS standard and are completely unencrypted, raising concerns about privacy and security.
The new RCS standard, issued by the GSMA with the consensus of major tech companies including Apple, Google, Xiaomi, and many others, will thoroughly address this issue. This standard applies MLS (Message Layer Security) technology to provide end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for RCS conversations between Android and iPhone devices. This ensures that only the sender and recipient can read the message content, protecting it from hackers, service providers, or any other third party.
For Xiaomi phone users in particular, and Android users in general, this is a huge step forward in security. Soon, they can confidently text friends and family using iPhones without worrying about their content being leaked.
The encryption process will be completely automatic, requiring no complex setup from the user, resulting in a seamless and significantly more secure messaging experience. Pioneering support for this new standard also clearly demonstrates Xiaomi's commitment to customer privacy and security.
Apple began supporting RCS in iOS 18 in late 2024, but that's just the beginning. The real key factor is the company's participation in and support of this new, cross-platform E2EE-integrated RCS standard. While Apple has confirmed its rollout, a specific date has yet to be announced. This industry-wide move also aligns with Google's persistent efforts to promote a modern and secure messaging platform to replace SMS.
