In the 2024/25 FA Cup final, Crystal Palace took the lead through Eberechi Eze in the 16th minute. But it was goalkeeper Henderson who was the focus of the match when he escaped a red card in the 24th minute after rushing out of the box to block Haaland, just 12 minutes before he brilliantly saved a penalty from the 11m mark.
After the match, coach Pep Guardiola showed his anger, stepping onto the pitch to argue with Henderson. The English goalkeeper calmly recounted: "I just said: 'You got the extra 10 minutes of injury time you wanted.' It's no big deal."
Sharing on BBC, the former MU goalkeeper appeared calm about the alleged handball outside the penalty area: "The ball had already gone into the penalty area, I knew it was okay. Haaland could have shot, but he gave the ball to Marmoush. And I read the direction."
Henderson brilliantly saved Marmoush's penalty from the 11m mark. |
“I knew I was going to save that shot. We had a feeling it was going to be Crystal Palace’s day. The manager planned it well and the team executed it perfectly. It was a well-deserved win,” Henderson said.
For his part, coach Oliver Glasner admitted he was "shocked" by Henderson's risky situation: "I just hope VAR doesn't intervene."
Joining Palace from MU for £15 million in the summer of 2023, Henderson quickly had the match of his life. After the final whistle, he emotionally turned to his late father: "At the beginning of the season, my father passed away. But I clearly felt that he was always with me today, in every move. This victory, I would like to dedicate to him."
