According to Nikkei Asia , the reason for the sharp increase in the used iPhone mini market in Japan stems from the fact that consumers in this country are looking for smaller iPhones that the new iPhone 14 and 15 cannot meet.
iPhone 13 mini is no longer officially sold by Apple
With 5.4-inch screens, the iPhone 12 mini and 13 mini were considered easier to use with one hand. But due to poor sales, Apple has not released any more mini models since the launch of the iPhone mini. Meanwhile, shortly after the launch of the iPhone 15, Apple stopped selling the iPhone 13 mini, making it impossible to buy from the company. This forced users who wanted the iPhone mini to turn to the used phone market, according to Masatoshi Ohno, head of Belong's consumer division.
In addition, the much lower prices of used phones have also attracted customers in Japan. With the cost of living rising and inflation at an all-time high, the used smartphone market is growing steadily and is expected to continue expanding as consumers look for more affordable options. According to the survey, the price of a new 128GB iPhone 15 in Japan is $1,320, while a used 64GB iPhone 12 mini sells for just $529.
Research from MM Research Institute predicts that the number of used phones sold in Japan will increase 9.8% in fiscal 2023 to about 2.57 million units.
