The painter of the gods

In the beliefs of the Dao people, altar paintings play a very important role, expressing their worldview through the activities of humans and deities depicted in the drawings.

In the northern mountainous region, very few Dao artisans still practice this unique painting craft.

Photographer Nguyen Huu Thong met Dao ethnic artisan Dang Phu Quyen in Thanh Long commune, Ha Quang district, Cao Bang province, and documented his creative activities along with his sharing about his more than 40 years of dedication to the traditional art of painting ancestral altars of his people. Photographer Nguyen Huu Thong's photo series made it into the Top 5 Photo Series in the Heritage Photography Award – Journey of Heritage.
