Risk of fire and explosion due to storage of gasoline and oil

Việt NamViệt Nam24/04/2024

Storing gasoline and oil in cans, plastic bottles... is very susceptible to punctures and breaks due to impact, leading to leakage and spillage of gasoline and oil, creating an environment with a high risk of fire and explosion.

People use plastic cans to buy gasoline to store for agricultural production.

In recent days, there have been showers in some places in the province, with insignificant rainfall. The heat continues to be intense, so many farmers bring cans, plastic bottles, etc. to buy gasoline and oil to store at home to use for pumping and watering fields and crops. From there, there are many potential risks of fire and explosion.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tong, in Phu Xuan hamlet, Thanh Hoa commune, Phung Hiep district, shared: “The hot weather with high temperatures will cause the water in the soil to evaporate quickly, causing the fields to dry up, greatly affecting the growth of the rice plants. Currently, my rice is more than 10 days old, because the harsh sunlight makes the water in the fields hot and dry quickly, causing the rice plants to grow slowly. Therefore, every 2-3 days I have to pump water into the fields.”

According to Mr. Huynh Minh Hong, in Xang Moi hamlet, Rach Goi town, plants, especially flowers, are easily wilted and exhausted due to prolonged heat and drought. In order for plants in the home garden to flourish, in addition to fertilizing and spraying pesticides, sufficient water must be provided. Therefore, every day he has to spend about 1 liter of gasoline to run the watering machine for the jackfruit and kumquat trees planted in the garden. Each time he buys 10 liters of gasoline, and when it runs out, he buys more.

Gasoline and oil are highly volatile liquids. Therefore, if stored in unsuitable containers, gasoline and oil can easily leak out. Not to mention, in households, gasoline and oil storage is often not isolated from the surrounding area and does not have specialized equipment to ensure fire and explosion safety, so the risk of fire is very high.

Lieutenant Colonel Le Hung Cuong, Head of the Fire Prevention, Fire Fighting and Rescue Police Department, Provincial Police, said that gasoline is a highly flammable and explosive substance with special physical and chemical properties. If stored in cans, plastic bottles, etc., it can easily lead to the phenomenon of rupture and puncture of the storage device, causing gasoline and oil to spill out, creating a dangerous environment for fire and explosion, especially in a closed, narrow space. Therefore, storing gasoline at home is a matter of concern. Because without strict fire prevention measures, it can easily lead to explosion, fire spread, and large fires causing serious damage to people and property.

To ensure fire prevention and fighting safety for people storing gasoline and oil for agricultural production in the hot season and to help people grasp basic knowledge and know effective measures to ensure fire prevention and fighting safety for gasoline and oil, the Fire Prevention, Fire Fighting and Rescue Police Department, Provincial Police recommends that people only buy enough gasoline and oil for daily use, and should not store it at home to ensure fire prevention and fighting safety.

In case a household has stored gasoline or oil, it is necessary to take safe storage measures by storing gasoline or oil in suitable equipment; storing in an independent area, absolutely not storing gasoline or oil in areas where people live; the area storing gasoline or oil must avoid direct sunlight, high temperatures and be well-ventilated to reduce the evaporation and accumulation of gasoline or oil vapors; have measures to prevent gasoline or oil from spilling out, away from sources of fire and heat; equip yourself and your family with portable fire fighting equipment, as well as fire prevention and fighting knowledge to promptly respond when a fire or explosion occurs.

Effective measures to extinguish gasoline and oil fires

That is, extinguish gasoline and oil fires with foam or powder fire extinguishers to extinguish fires such as dry powder fire extinguishers BC, ABC, CO2 gas or Foam. Extinguish gasoline and oil fires with sand, because sand is a substance that has the ability to absorb heat very well, preventing the fire from contacting oxygen; use sand to prevent the flammable substance from spreading, this is a simple, quite effective method and almost anyone can use it to extinguish fires.

Use a blanket or a water-absorbent screen to completely cover the surface of the fire to extinguish gasoline or oil fires. This is a very suitable measure for places with small areas to be extinguished. Note, do not use water to extinguish gasoline or oil fires.
