According to the Provincial Center for Disease Control (CDC), from the beginning of 2026 to the present, the province has recorded 2 deaths due to rabies, an increase of 2 cases compared to the same period in 2025. The health sector stated that rabies has a nearly 100% mortality rate once the disease has developed.
According to Dr. Le Thi Thang, Deputy Head of the Infectious Diseases Department at the provincial CDC, the current rabies situation requires special attention, especially regarding dogs and cats that have not been fully vaccinated against rabies, and dogs that are allowed to roam freely in public places.
Rabies is a particularly dangerous infectious disease, with a nearly 100% mortality rate once the disease develops. The rabies virus is primarily transmitted through bites, scratches, or when the saliva of an infected animal comes into contact with open wounds, mucous membranes of the eyes, mouth, or nose. However, the disease is entirely preventable with proper wound treatment and timely vaccination after exposure.
The risk of rabies infection is currently increasing. At the provincial CDC, the number of people seeking rabies vaccination due to animal bites, mainly from dogs, has risen. People need to closely manage their pets, not let dogs and cats roam freely, and get them vaccinated annually. If bitten or scratched, clean the wound thoroughly with soap under running water and go immediately to a medical facility for advice, vaccination, and anti-rabies serum if indicated. People are strongly advised against self-treating or using folk remedies.
