Bookmakers predict Newcastle coach will replace Southgate

Topping the list are two names familiar to Premier League fans: Eddie Howe, currently managing Newcastle, and Graham Potter, who previously managed Brighton and Chelsea.

According to European bookmakers, the odds for Howe to replace Southgate range from 2/1 to 3/1. Meanwhile, the corresponding odds for Potter range from 3/2 to 4/1.

These are two options that the British media believes in, because they are both British.

Mr. Howe, 46 years old, is famous for his long time leading Bournemouth, bringing the team to two consecutive promotions from the Second Division to the Premier League within 3 years. In November 2021, Mr. Howe was appointed head coach by Newcastle.

The English strategist is closely associated with the change of ownership, as well as the noisy change of life of Newcastle. He steered the team to successfully stay in the league in the first season, and successfully turned Newcastle into a force in English football in the next 2 seasons.

However, the ability of coach Howe is still doubted. The media believes that Newcastle need to find a more famous coach to be able to really join the championship race.

Meanwhile, Coach Potter caused a lot of controversy during his time leading Chelsea. Mr. Potter had 3 successful years working at Brighton, before coming to Chelsea in September 2022 to replace Coach Tuchel.

With a winning rate of only 38.7%, Coach Potter was fired by Chelsea in April 2023. Since then, he has not led any other club.

Coming in third on the shortlist to replace Southgate is Lee Carsley, who has coached England’s youth teams since 2020. Following the success of De La Fuente, who also came through the Spanish youth teams, the FA may look to youth coaches. Carsley’s odds are around 5/1.

Next on the list of candidates are names such as: Thomas Tuchel (6/1), Mauricio Pochettino (7/1), Jurgen Klopp (14/1)... However, the possibility of the FA choosing a foreign coach is not high, after the failures of Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello in the past.
