The new product combines shredded snake meat, black fungus and Chinese dried ham. These are all indispensable ingredients of the famous snake stew of the 'fragrant harbor'.
Some diners in Hong Kong (China) and around southern China have long enjoyed stewed snake, especially during the cold winter months.
According to a Cantonese proverb, the best time to eat snake is “when the autumn wind begins to blow.” Many people believe that snake meat has medicinal properties, improves skin condition, and warms the body.
Rich culinary cultures based on using snake as an ingredient are also common in other regions of Southeast Asia, such as Vietnam and Thailand.
“The combination of cheese and diced chicken gives the snake meat a richer flavor,” the pizza company said in a statement before the dish went on sale last week, adding that the “nutritious” meat “can enhance blood circulation” as taught in traditional Chinese medicine.
“The combination of snakes and pizza marks a breakthrough in the conventional notion of what it means to maintain good health while still awakening the taste buds of diners,” the company emphasized.
The American pizza company partnered with Ser Wong Fun – a snake restaurant in Central Hong Kong (China) dating back to 1895, to get this unique recipe.
The 22cm pizza comes with abalone sauce instead of the usual tomato base and is expected to be sold until November 22.
According to CNN Travel, this unique pizza has a solid meat texture similar to dried chicken.
“I thought it was scary at first. Snakes are not a food in many cultures, especially in the West,” said Mabel Sieh, a diner from Hong Kong who especially enjoys trying new pizza flavors.
But Rachel Wong, another Hong Kong (China) diner, seemed to enjoy this new dish.
“The texture is a bit like chicken and it tastes like fish and other seafood, so I like to have it as a protein-rich meal in the winter,” she says.
Karen Chan, general manager of the pizza company, said the company tapped the expertise of chefs at Ser Wong Fun restaurant to find the best snake meat recipe.
“The special solid pizzas offer the perfect balance of all the flavors, making them both appealing and delicious in this winter,” she said.
The company is also introducing a pizza made with Chinese preserved sausages featured in the claypot rice dish that is popular among Hong Kongers during cooler weather.
This isn't the first time Asian brands have taken a more "adventurous cuisine" approach to celebrate local food cultures.
Previously, in Taiwan (China), the above restaurant chain also introduced pizzas made from durian, pig's blood and eggs - ingredients that play an important role in local culinary culture.
Additionally, in Japan, the restaurant has also created a pizza topped with Tonkotsu ramen (pork bone soup ramen).
Another restaurant also put pearls on its pizza three years ago in Taiwan (China) as a tribute to pearl milk tea, the local dessert drink that has become popular around the world .
