In the era of the rapidly spreading Fourth Industrial Revolution, the concept of "Smart Factory" has become a key factor in helping businesses enhance their competitiveness. In the southernmost region of Vietnam, the Ca Mau Fertilizer Plant, belonging to Ca Mau Petroleum Fertilizer Joint Stock Company (PVCFC), is a prime example of a systematic digital transformation, progressing from a level 2 automation platform to an integrated, intelligent production model.

Currently, the Ca Mau Fertilizer Plant has achieved Level 2 (automated plant) according to international standards for the Smart Industry Readiness Index. However, the name "smart plant" stems from the vision and roadmap for comprehensive digital transformation that the company is steadfastly pursuing, aiming for a higher level in the future.

Production process data at the Ca Mau Fertilizer Plant is automatically updated, aggregated, and analyzed in real time, helping managers make quick and accurate decisions.

Productivity increased by over 110%.

On October 1st, in Khanh An commune, the company announced the completion of Phase 1 of the Smart Factory Upgrade Project. Mr. Nguyen Minh Tam, Head of the Digital Transformation Department of the company, said:
"After the upgrade project is implemented, unit leaders will be able to monitor all plant operations online, without relying on human intervention."

The core difference of the smart factory model lies not only in the level of automation, but also in its ability to synchronously apply core technologies of Industry 4.0 such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and big data, along with the integration of advanced management systems, including Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software and Manufacturing Execution System (MES).

With Phase 1, the "Smart Plant" project has upgraded Ca Mau Fertilizer Plant from Level 2 to Level 3 – an integrated plant. At this level, all data is synchronized and centrally controlled in real time, creating a solid foundation for quick and accurate decision-making.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tung, Deputy General Director of the company, stated: “ Upon reaching level 3, the entire factory database is integrated into a centralized monitoring platform, enabling management to proactively coordinate production and control consumption per unit of product. As a result, production costs are optimized, product quality is improved, and competitiveness is significantly enhanced.”

According to the Plant's management, after the transformation, the productivity of Ca Mau Fertilizer Plant has increased by more than 110%, confirming the tangible effectiveness of this process.

Towards a "self-sufficient factory"

A robustly integrated data platform , along with the deployment of key management software, is paving the way for Ca Mau Fertilizer Plant to adopt more advanced technologies. Mr. Bui Van Chuong, Deputy Head of the Plant's Technical Department, shared: “With the existing data platform, we are confident that we will soon successfully apply modern technologies such as AI, ERP, and MES, meeting the requirements of the leadership and each individual in the company.”

The journey of Ca Mau Fertilizer Plant is not only aimed at building a modern factory, but also serves as clear evidence of Vietnam's technological capabilities.

Not stopping there, the company aims to reach level 4 - a self-sufficient factory, with a focus on applying artificial intelligence, developing smart warehouses, and implementing a Digital Twin factory model.

The digital transformation journey of Ca Mau Fertilizer Company has not only brought about technological changes but also transformed the working mindset of its engineers and workers, shifting them from passive to proactive, creative, and adaptable to the modern production environment.

More than just an engineering project, the "Smart Factory" journey is a testament to Vietnam's technological capabilities, contributing to the realization of the National Digital Transformation Strategy, and affirming Ca Mau Fertilizer's pioneering position in the heavy industry sector, aiming for safe, sustainable, and environmentally friendly production.
