Located in Hamlet 4, Dao Thanh Commune, My Tho City ( Tien Giang Province), guesthouse No. 101, owned by Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy - an 82-year-old woman and the wife of a fallen soldier - has become a shining example of the "green guesthouse" model with its unique and meaningful initiatives.
Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy stands amidst the lush greenery at her boarding house in Tien Giang province.
After 10 years of operation, the boarding house with 80 rooms has become a home for nearly 200 residents, mainly workers, students, and schoolchildren.
The challenge of waste and innovative solutions.
With an average daily waste volume of up to 200 kg and a tendency to increase, plus the fact that the boarding house is located deep in an alley making it inaccessible for specialized vehicles to collect waste directly, Ms. Thuy came up with the initiative to build a comprehensive and sustainable waste management system.
A highlight of the hostel's waste management strategy is the sorting of waste at the source. Organic waste is separated to be used as fertilizer for plants, while solid waste and plastic are collected and sold to recycling centers at the end of the week. Notably, the money earned from selling the recycled materials goes into a "piggy bank"—a unique initiative to incentivize tenants to participate in sorting and disposing of waste.
To maintain motivation and encourage active participation from tenants, the boarding house has developed a diverse and attractive reward system. Each month, based on the results of the Tien Giang provincial lottery, one lucky room receives a valuable prize such as a juicer, a Panasonic oven, or an Omo laundry detergent combo. After many years of implementation, more than 50 prizes have been awarded.
In addition, the guesthouse annually awards 30 free trips to members with outstanding achievements in environmental protection. The selection of recipients is done openly and transparently through a voting process.
Give gifts to tenants.
Community and environmental activities
"Green Sunday" is a special initiative of the hostel, where all members participate in cleaning and sweeping not only within the hostel grounds but also in the surrounding area. They work together to plant trees, weed, collect trash, and even plant water hyacinths in ditches to naturally filter wastewater.
One of the most noteworthy aspects of Hostel No. 101 is its long-term plan for clean energy use. Through accumulated savings from electricity conservation activities and environmental funds, the hostel aims to install a 10kW solar energy system within 36 months. This system is expected to supply approximately 20% of the hostel's total electricity consumption, equivalent to 15kWh of free electricity per month per room.
Residents' trash disposal area
Ms. Thuy's "green hostel" model goes beyond simply addressing environmental issues; it also aims to build a sustainable community where everyone shares responsibilities and benefits. The success of Hostel No. 101 has inspired many other hostels nationwide, contributing to the sustainable development trend in the rental accommodation sector.
It can be said that, with its unique initiatives and long-term vision, Hostel No. 101 has truly become a shining example of combining business and environmental protection, while simultaneously building a civilized and environmentally friendly community.
